Overclocking?

I really don't get overclocking. I'm going to build a AMD 965 Quad that runs at 3.4 Gigs and I'll put 8 Gigs of DDR3 1333 so why would I need to overclock a powerhouse like that? I was thinking of the 1090t 6 Core but today the other two cores just don't make any since. So what can you do with a overclock 965 that you can't do when you don't overclock it?

Not much more than increase your FPS in games, braggin rights in benchmark programs and shorten the life of your hardware.

i have the 965 OC'ed to 3.9 GHz just by using my mobo's simple BIOS multiplier.

as previously mentioned, its a little performance boost. if you can get more performance out of your hardware, why not? as long as you're safe about it and don't go beyond the limits of your hardware (which is different for everyone, no two pieces of hardware are the same)

Very true I had mine over clocked but really felt like it ran slower.

So i just clocked it back down and left it as is no need to fry anything anyway im pretty fast as it is

if it feels slower, then its usually because your system can't handle the clock that its at. if you stress test your overclocks and they fail, then that's the surefire way to tell.

never failed at all i actuall ran the ram test and the prime nothing happened it is just me belive me i have a boot up time of at least 42 seconds flat with out a ssd sometimes it hits 38 seconds boot not bad in my opinion

how do you boot that fast without an ssd?

I got what i thought was fast hardware guess it paid off but soon will upgrade to a ssd and a new mainboard.

Also if you look at w hat i am using i am running a 500 gb baracuda not that fastest but it helps the boot performance

you must have the bare minimum loading under windows. that restart time is on a 7 boot? or older OS?

well my system is lean i have a back up external and the main HD is just games pretty much
