Overheating CPU problems

I have a rather nice self built PC for about 9 months now.
I have used it for a variety of CPU extensive programs, but it has recently started to overheat and crash.
I was wondering if there is any way to turn down the performance so that the CPU will be less overworked, less hot, and hopefully crash less?

What type of CPU cooler do you have installed? Has it come loose? Has the thermal paste been over applied or under applied? Is the CPU cooler fan/heatsink clogged with dust and lent?

Also , make sure the fan is set to full blast in the bios. If you`ve never messed with that then it probably is, but you could always double check.

my computer tower as a dial on the front that adjusts the fan intensity, and it is currently at full blast

i have a CPU fan, and did not apply any thermal paste on this computer

I would pull the fan, clean it, make sure the cpu is clean, and install some thermal compound. That should take care of any overheating. Strange you say you get a blue screen, as with an overheating cpu the pc should just shutdown.

Not having the paste on it could be most of the issue. I use Cooler Master Ice Fusion. I got it from Tigerdirect when I built my 1st machine.

How long has it been running without thermal paste?
That is a serious issue that could potentially hard your cpu.

seriously, if you never applied thermal paste it's a miracle it is working at all.
