Guys I have a question I have noticed that in the past week my PC was opening pages on the web slow then usually so I checked a few thing and everything is the same but my DSL speed. I am on a 3meg system here is the only thing I see that has changed. My PC would run a speed test and the results would be 3.01mbs all the time but now the best is 2.85mbs but the upload speed is the same. That small change would not be noticed surfing the web right?? I have been around and around with at&t about the change in speed but they told me it was nothing they could do.. Something changed for my speed to change from 3.01 to 2.85??? What would you check for this problem??

That sounds like a normal change in speed caused by your provider. If you run the test a few more times I'm pretty sure you'll see more deviations.

More Speed Tests:
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Speed Test - dslreports.com

If you want to speed up your computer in general:

Download CCleaner: Download Link
Use it to clean out old Browser temporary files, etc. It should help your browser speed.
Do not use the Registry Cleaner

Download Defraggler: Download Link
Use it to run a QuickDefrag right now, and then a Full Defrag the next time you get a chance. The quick defrag shouldn't take more than 10-30 minutes, the full defrag may take hours depending on size of files, fragmentation, etc.

Make a speedtest from here. Pick a server about 400-500 miles away. Your Ping time should be around 50ms.

That difference won't affect your browsing speed, there's gotta be something else. 3mbps is VERY FAST, I'm on 1.5mbps, and I load websites quite fast.

I use that speed test all the time, Like I said a week ago I was getting 3.01mbs down and 330kps up until last week now 2.86mbs and 330kps and I don't know what changed. I have changed everything modem, cables, box on the outside of the house, I even had a bellsouth tech at the house today and he said it was in there spec but there spec is 2.0mbs on a 3 meg system. They told me as long as you were getting 1.6mbs on a 3.0 plan it was FINE... that was BS to me...

I am running a motorola 3000 modum with 4 ports that are hard wired in to 1 more PC. But since this small issue I unhook it off the modum. The only thing is it droped about 150kbs from a week ago. Maybe that is not enough to see a differance in speed??

It is not the upload/download time that matters in this case. It is the Ping time. That gives you an idea thru how many hoops they send you.

In that case I would have a closer look at the browser add-ons. Or try different browsers and see whether it is the same.

Well I did what you said and used another browser and I get the same speed. It is almost like it hit a wall at 2.8mbps and for 2 years it always did 3.01 or better I think it is something with bellsouth DSL and not my network. Should I able to tell the differance from 2.8mbps to 3.01mbps??

I don't think 2.8 or 3.01 make a big difference. I am on Bell South (ATT) too and have not noticed any change in performance recently. Sometimes, when the net is loaded, it seems to slow down a little. But that is very temporary. And again, the download/upload speeds and the speed to access a website are two different things. If you access a website, it depends on the number of hops they send you thru and how fast those hops respond. You can clearly see the difference if you access a site in e.g. Atlanta which is close to you versus an overseas site in Europe or Japan.

Here is an extract from this site:

The Internet is a global network, basically a vast grouping of computers transferring data to one another. Connection speeds will vary depending on many conditions such as the time of day and the amount of congestion on the Internet in general. When you request a Web page from a server on the Internet, both the request and the resulting page travel over a series of links that help comprise the Internet. Points between links are often referred to as "hops." So depending on the number of people connecting to our servers, the number of "hops" taken to get to our site, the quality of the connections between each hop to this site and various other factors, your Internet connection speed will always vary.

Yes you are right, The only thing is why did the speed change?? When you check it everyday and out of the blue it is 150kbps slower and they tell you that is normal that don't set well with me..I ask WHAT is normal they said on a 3meg system that 1.6 was in range and I laughed. They can change the speed down to 1meg and say it is in range. What speed are you running on bellsouth at&t?

This is my speed with Bell South:

linespeed1.png

And this is my speed when I am in Germany. But despite the much faster speed (which is really noticable for downloads), I need much more time to access webpages in the US, e.g. this forum.

linetest3.png

And Btw, the speed changes all the time. And a difference of 150Kbps is really minor.

What Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications are you running? If either one or both are checking a web page for security, then that would cause the page to open slowly.

Well, for Download you have twice my speed (yours is in Megs and mine is in Kilo) and for Upload it's about the same. But you saw even on my fast line in Germany, the upload speed is not great.
It is possible that they switched your line. Why don't you ask them. They usually have records.
But all in all you should have a reasonable working speed.

Can you tell a lot of differance from one to another? I mean the speed in germany. I have done everything and I cannot get the speed back to were it was 2 weeks ago, I guess I am going to live with this BS.. Everybody on the net is mad as **** over the way bellsouth AT&T does people there service in the worst I have ever seen... Maybe the 150kbps will not make that much differance.
