After months of not finding a half decent webcam app that is offline that allows me to take the occasional picture, I find out that Microsoft paint apparrently can do this.
Problem is, when i hit the file menu, the "from scanner or camera" menu is disabled, even after re-enabling the webcam. help?

*edit*
apparently that's only if you already have an application displaying output from the webcam.
is there a single simple application that allows you to take a picture directly from your webcam and save it to your hard drive, with no futzing with ftp and all that crap?
there is a billion apps to stream your webcam or whatever, but seems like nothing that will turn your webcam into a camera in a pinch.

And yeah I problably won't use it, but it still would ne nice to have in emergencies.

kinda like cameroid.com, but without all of the effects and as an offline app.
Or a port of Cheese, a GNOME photobooth clone.

Don't know of any apps right off, but in a pinch you could hit PrtScn to copy the desktop to the clipboard/paste into paint and crop to the pic. I'm shocked that taking a snap shot is not a common thing in these apps. Would think all of them could do it.

Yeah that works for desktops, but not for webcams.

The only app that I found that works is the Cyberlink suite that came with my computer, which I have to manually copy between computers since I accidently deleted the installer.
And I'd rather have a less processor intensive app that actually works without freezing.

Probably he means that it takes a picture of your desktop, not i.e your face. Anyways, Cheese (sadly) isnt available for Windows, since they support open-source. I kinda hope they dont make it for Windows, so people would see the light ;)

I'm currently attempting to install Cheese via cygwin, but I give it a 1:1,000,000 chance of working, because Cheese is not in the default download repository and I'm figuring out how to include it.

Fortunately I have played with Linux before So I think I can do it With the help of my trusty sidekick, Google.

So, if its ok with you, you can install ubuntu, and just download it from synaptic or
sudo apt-get install cheese

paint only allows you to download pictures from a scanner or from a camera's memory
it doesn't allow you to watch the webcam's live screen, which is what you want (?)

most webcams have a button on them to take snaps - my Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 allows you to take instant snaps, and files them straight away into their own folder..

what webcam have you got..?

Yeah Jolicloud is based off of Ubuntu Netbook Remix but is more optimized, And I'm kinda looking at using it as my primary (or only) OS.
Because looking at my running apps all i have is three gadgets, a web browser, and a mail/rss client.
That's really all i need, And Joliclud is definitely a more lightweight OS (plus the GPU drivers actually take advantage of the GPU's capabilities)
I think I may just do that, with 7 as a dualboot for when i need Windows.
