Partition c and d drives

Hi,

I just had to reformat my laptop and I noticed the C drive takes up 453 gb and the d drive is only 11.9 gb, which is all recovery files.
I would like to decrease the size of the c drive and add some to the d drive, so I can store images etc. in d drive which I can recover in case of crash.
Can someone suggest a good tool or tutorial to move drive partition ?

I strongly recommend leaving the D partition alone. If you need to restore your computer ever, you want that in prime condition.

If you wanted, you could shrink the C partition, then create a new partition in the unallocated space. Here are a couple of tutorials for you:

I might suggest the opposite, depending on some circumstances. For example, do you have an option of burning recovery discs, such as the utlity HP includes on their systems? If so, do this, and then you can delete D, shrink C, and then make a new D partition to be the size you want.

Having your only recovery option stored on your hard drive is never a good idea. If the drive goes, not only is your data gone, but so is your recovery. With the discs, you could replace the drive, and be back up and running shortly thereafter.

Drives and partitions

Hi,

Thanks to you both for the advice regarding my drives.
When I go into my D drive there is a small icon labeled "Recovery" and when I open that all I see is text saying "Recovery Partition. Warning. This area of your hard drive (or partition) contains files used to perform a system recovery. etc etc"

Is it possible to copy these flies to an external hard drive as a back up ? I don't really want to play around with them is there is a risk of losing them.

I do not know that you could recover if you move (copy/delete) those files to an external drive. Leave that partition completely alone as J_K says.

To safeguard your images etc (photos? or system images?) use an external drive. If your C:\ drive crashes it will probably take D:\ with it.

OK, I will leave things alone. I only hope that if my C drive does crash it does not take my D drive with it because that is the only place I have recovery files stored.
I do have a "repair" DVD that a friend made for me when I first bought the laptop, but that is obviously not going to hold all the recovery files that are in my D drive.

I recommend purchasing an external hard drive. It is never safe to have only 1 copy of data.

The price has come down greatly. If you go to TigerDirect today, you can buy a 1TB internal drive for $39.99, and an enclosure to make it external will cost you about $20.

For $60, you can have peace of mind, because you can create system images.

40 bucks for 1TB ? It wasn't that long ago I paid that much for a 16 gb thumb drive.
I actually have a 1TB hard drive already, an internal Samsung which sits in a Besta docking station, and cost a lot more than $40. Am currently reading a tutorial on backing up the whole computer.
