Partition gone after xp to 7

Hello everyone,

i just updated my gaming pc from win xp to 7 recently and as i switch to mac a few years ago im not use to win anymore so sorry if thats a very stupid problem.

I have 2 hard drives in my pc, a 1,5tb and a 500 gig one.
the 1,5 tb is split up into 3 partitions, 1tb, 15 gig, and the rest.
the 15 gig is the windows partition.

and for some reason i can not see the 1tb partition in windows.
if i boot ubuntu i can access all partitions without problems, same as i was able to when i had xp running. so luckily i know that the data is not lost, just not accessible via 7 atm.

what am i doing wrong? why is win 7 not showing this partition ? its normal ntfs and it used to work just fine with xp. i didnt change anything. :/

When going into the Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage you can simply double click on the Storage item there to bring up the DM if you forgot how to get to that. It's likely the volume was simply not mounted by Windows will be in need of being assigned a logical drive letter once initialized in order to be seen and available in 7.

Sometimes a simply right click on the partition in the DM and given a new drive letter with the click on the apply will set things for you. The two images here will show how to make a drive or partition active as well as how to change or simply assign a drive letter.

You have 3 separate installs of Windows 7, correct?

You may have to change the boot order

When you right-click on the Computer icon on the desktop, choose properties, click the advanced System Settings, click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.

Two out of the three are the retail installs of both the 64bit primary OS with the 32bit on for running a few older stubborn programs that can't be used in the XP mode. The one I'm booted in is the second 64bit RC installation still running strong since May! While the RC is still on I can cross compare things as well as dump something on there first before installing it on the retail installs.

Getting back to you sluppy the main reason why you can still see onto the 1tb partition even on any MS type partition while booted in ubuntu is what makes it a great recovery tool if Windows fails to load for some reason. For the most a refresh. making the volume active, and try assigning a new drive letter should help you there.

You may also want to schedule a check disk in case the drive is now starting to see some bad sectors as well. Use the "chkdsk /r" repair switch and schedule that for the next startup.

Win simply did not assigned a drive letter to the partition, that was the problem! sooo easy... i could bite my ass for not thinking of it myself!
And thanks for the detailed way of finding the comp manager nighthawk, its been ages since i had to use it

Actually what we need here is a snipping of what sluppy has in the DM there for clarification. The two screens there were simply posted as a reference to help illustrate things. A look at how the partitions are layed out there would be more useful.

It seems we missed each other's posts! Glad to hear to the good news there! Generally it's something that simple with any fresh install of Windows anyways!
