partitioning the c drive

No, the Windows 7 partition tool won't let you do anything that'll be detrimental to the system.

You are leaving out many details that would allow us to answer the question. You're C drive should be your system partition, and it shouldn't have let you format it. However, if it is not your system partition, then you should be able to format it and use it for storage, although it would bug me to not be using the C drive for Windows.

Also, you didn't tell us if this partition is on the same drive as your Windows install. if so, you definitely do not want to store your system image there. If your hard drive dies, so does your chance at a restore. That's why restore partitions on OEM systems shouldn't be relied upon, instead, backup discs should be created. Ideally, you want the system image off of the computer completely.

The best use of this partition would be to move your data there. Then it is away from the system so if anything happens to the system partition, your data is safe.
And as Deacon Frost says, DO NOT use it for storing images. You better use an external disk for that - best one that is not online when you do not image. That way it is also safe from malware. The easiest and reliable imaging program I have used up to now is the free Macrium.

sorry to confuse you all i have a 1TB drive. the c drive has the op system on. the partition b i made in c i was thinking of puting data on. that's how it was when i got the pc. it had to go back for repair and i gave them the 3 recovery discs and the 1 repair disc i made when i bought the pc and when i got it home and booted up i only had c drive with no d drive. so i have just made a new partition b drive. will the recovery discs still work if need be? i was told they wont. and told a system image would not work either.

If you make an image now, it should work. I see no reason why not. Just don't put it on the same physical disk as the OS for the reasons explained above.

PS: I would rename the partition D, E or F because B is traditionally reserved for the floppy drives.

i cant use them drive letters they are in use windows gave me the choice of b i have no floppy drive. i have a image on a external drive

Just one thing .... though not so much important . It is better to make the Data drive logical (not primary).
You can use Partition Wizard Bootable CD to manage your partitions easily .

Download Partition Wizard Bootable CD , burn it in a cd. Boot from the cd. It will display all your partitions. Right click on Data partition, and "Set partition as logical" . ( the initial steps are displayed in the webpage link , at the last picture, you are to right click on the data partition )
