PC boots up to startup repair after installing Windows 7 SP1

Today, I decided to download SP1, since there was this application that required it. Anyways, it got downloaded without any problems, but while it was installing, it got stuck for over half an hour, but then completed the installation, which made me restart my PC.

However, after that, It booted into startup repair, telling me that Windows won't start and it couldn't fix any problems, which made me do a system recovery and boot up my PC, I also tried installing SP1 again, but had the same exact problem.

Hmm - not a common occurrence!
let's do a few basic checks before attempting another SP1 install

First - did you attempt the install from Windows Update, or from the standalone installer?


Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

I tried to install SP1 by using Windows Update and I didn't get any error codes, and I attached the CBS.Zip file to my first post.

it's dated "2015-05-21 20:15" - so should be after your latest attempts to install SP1

The 0x80072efe error is a classic 'could not connect to server' error

It's so long since I dealt with this type of error that I can't remember whether v320 of the Windows Update agent is compatible with RTM Win7 or not! - but I think it should be, and this means that the above error results from problems with the update Agent rather than anything else.

Either way, I think the best option is to clear the decks, and see what happens next.
Please do a full reset of Windows Updates - see here... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html
Once complete, do NOT attempt to install any updates.
Simply do a Check for updates, and post the list of available updates.
Also, download the standalone installer of SP1 - it's a large file - from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842 You'll want the windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe file

Save it - but do NOT attempt to install it yet.

Then post the new windowsupdate.log file, and we'll see what's what, and what we can do.

OK - the log looks fine, as far as I can tell.

First, run the Malicious Software Removal Tool - once it's finished, then attempt the update of SP1.
If that fails, reboot twice, then post the new windowsupdate.log file, and attempt the installation using the downloaded file - post the windowsupdate log file after that one, too.
