My Dell Studio MT laptop does not recognize a USB 3.0 thumb drive that it HAS recognized in the past. In device management, it shows up under Other and Properties show unknown device, no driver found. I have checked the drive on my Windows 7 desktop PC, and it is fine. The laptop has no USB 3.0 ports, only USB 2.0 ports. However the laptop recognizes other USB 3.0 external drives that I attach.

The thumb drive may be going bad.

Or there might be some issue with your Dell Studio MT laptop:
  • Go to Device Manager, and see if there are any USB devices which have a yellow triangle next to them. If so, right click on each such device and choose uninstall.
  • If you uninstalled any devices, right-click on the top item in the list and choose "Search for hardware devices" or whatever the wording is. Doing this will reinstall any devices that you uninstalled.
Doing this procedure should fix the problem with the thumb drive.

The thumb drive may be going bad.

I am able to access the thumb drive on my desktop PC.

I was wrong about this thumb drive having been used on the laptop before. I believe this is the first time I attempted to use it on the laptop.

Go to Device Manager, and see if there are any USB devices which have a yellow triangle next to them. If so, right click on each such device and choose uninstall.

There are no yellow triangles in device manager. I do see the thumb drive listed under "Other" as an unknown device with an unknown driver (the Other icon has a small question mark).

I just realized that my System Info on sevenforums is out-of-date. It is info for an old laptop. I ran SystemInfo (following your directions). When I click the Set Info button, the fields do not change! The new info is not uploaded. What am I doing wrong?
