Solved PC only shares public folders, I can not make it share others

Gone through several examples to make it share.

The shared folder name will show up as a shared folder on the network, but always says I have no permissions to view them.

I can open the public folders and view them on the network.
I also tried setting up a user on the PC with password. And putting the user in as authorized under advanced settings.

I wanted to share the my pictures folder on the PC.

There are two stages to sharing non public folders over a network - you need to set the Base NTFS file permissions and also the network sharing permissions.

First off be aware that Microsoft developed Home-group networking on Windows 7 and later to cater for this very situation, and it can be a lot easier to use as Windows itself controls most of the permissions etc.

The "user" folders are set-up with NTFS permissions for the user they relate to, so in order to access them remotely over the network you need to do so as the allocated user ie. to access the pictures of user Fred on PC1 there needs to be a User Fred on PC2 (best, if using Passwords, that these are the same).

If you want to share generally across the network you need to right click on the Pictures folder click properties and security and add read, (and Write) permissions to user "Everyone".

Once you have this done you need to set the network permissions to give either the specific user or everyone suitable access

Although it seems complex it's harder to explain than do

I had a similar issue. Put all my pictures​ in PUBLIC folder. Now everyone has access to them.
Also, I back them up to a NAS by way of a free sync tool to mapped drive.

I did give all 3 permissions to everyone.
The shared folder name appears on the network.

Is there some kind of diagnostic program that will point out the problem?

Now about this user name issue, an identical user name and password for PC1, and PC2 is required to share a folder?

I thought about that. Would it involve a long time to move into the public folder a ton of pictures?

The issue you describe would suggest that the folder is correctly set-up, but the actual contents are not, when setting the file permissions ensure that the apply to subfolders/files option (not sure of exact wording) is set to on

As for moving the files If they are on the same drive as the Public folders then It should be very quick, if on different drive it's an actual move rather than a re-assign so would take longer

I just created a user named scott with password.
Then I went to sharing tab, properties, advanced , told it to add scott, check names worked.
Then I give scott full controll.

Now when I go to network on the other PC, I see absolutely no folders listed for the PC I want to share from.
These PC are right next to each other. So doing this made the problem worse.

Are you logged in as scott on the veiwing PC? you need to be unless you give everyone access to the files and folders on the viewed PC

Well sharing is now totally dead including public folders, consternations!
Is is time to swap this out for another PC running windows 8?
I have one I built, I just have not taken the time to copy over bunches of files.
The PC is my wife's and it is older win7 PC and a little bit slow.

Unless someone can help me, I think it is my only option for now.

Yes, I am.

I have 3 PC, the win7 media center PC downstairs shares fine, Not a problem setting it up, did not have to do anything special.

The PC I am trying to view files on right now is Ubuntu OS.
But the win7 PC downstairs also can not see any files.

I adjusted some share settings from 128 bit to 40 ,and turned on password protected sharing from homegroup-workgroup.
I quess put them back the way they were.

In theory, no. Files do not actually physically move, since they are on the same drive. Table is updated to indicate new location.

I switched back the settings in control panel for advanced sharing, but still trying to view any shares now results in zero folder items displayed.

ok, went downstairs, the win7 PC can see Tricia-PC but not access the shared files.

Everything seems set correctly

Let's try something else, on the sharing PC set the NTFS permissions to give user Everyone full access and also set sharing permissions for the folder and files also to share with Everyone - this should set things the same as the working public folder ]/

I ran these 2 commands and am doing a reboot of the PC.
