Solved PC only shares public folders, I can not make it share others

Everything seems set correctly

Let's try something else, on the sharing PC set the NTFS permissions to give user Everyone full access and also set sharing permissions for the folder and files also to share with Everyone - this should set things the same as the working public folder ]/

I understand setting to Everyone in the shared folder permissions settings.

Where is the setting for Everyone in NTFS permissions?

Everyone is a standard user and should be present in the list under properties - security though as the pictures folder is normally limited to just the actual user you may have to go via Edit - Add and enter everyone and search

Once the full control rights are assigned the folder should act just like the public folders

Thanks. I did not see Everyone in the security list for the shared folder. So I added 'Everyone'.
Then clicked full control.
It wants to run thru every single file, it displays their names slowly, this could take a while, does that sound right?

It depends on the system, but it can take a while when there are a lot of files.

The fact that you are asking this question now suggests to me that the previous attempts to set permissions did not take correctly as the time taken is not dependent on the username involved but the files accessed. I deal with file sets in the tens of thousands so I drink more coffee than I should waiting for actions to complete

It worked!
The files are now visible, I can open them.
So thank you.

Why did this need to be done, the setting to everyone in security tab, and does this mean everyone is normally in security tab with full control and somehow this PC had lost it?

Another thing, I can also view the files on my Ubuntu PC now.
I went to network, clicked Tricia-PC. I was prompted for a username and password.
I had in the share PC setup an admin called scott with a password, so I typed this in and was connected to the share.
Also since I just set full control to the 'Pictures', but the others shares I made are also working, why is that?

But was wondering why does the share PC require a username and password?
If I connect to the downstairs win7 PC, it does not ask for a user and password.

Also the ubuntu screen shows the shares without a '$' symbol, but 'c$' also requires a password but I can not gain access.
Other pic shows ubuntu accesses the share now

The User folders are designed to be Personal and Private across the network If you wish to share files you are "expected" to locate them in the public folders, (Or on home based systems use Homegroup which by default does share the personal folders). It's Microsoft's attempt to give some organisation to files in the growing number of networks in the home, this is why we had to do all the work to use the older system
