Hello folks,

Taxman cometh....

Planning to go digital before taxman stops by the door. I am looking into scanners and the softwares. I have sort of zeroed on a scanner, but I can't find the software for document organization. Please do not suggest me Paperport, that is what they used to use at my previous workplace and can't not talk about it in a civil fashion.

Evernote is not an option either. I would like to have a software that does not have sync abilities or does not ping home. Not that I am a millionaire, still would like to respect my privacy. (And I am too stupid to use that software. I installed 4 times, but just didn't get a hang of it. Could not find where the heck it stores my files..)

Is there any other software that can be used for document organization,
- that does not lock documents in its database
- Offers tagging option
- In ideal case, I would like the software to reproduce the folder structure on the hard disk folder, but not mandatory really, but as I said earlier, the files should be accessible without the software.
- Not necessarily need to work with the scanner. Stand-alone independent program is best.

Many thanks in advance.

Fujitsu's ScanSnap xi500 scanner has a package that includes organizing software. I have the earlier version, the S1500 and love it. The ix500 has some connectivity problems when it first came out but that has long since been resolved so I highly recommend it.

I personally prefer to use Windows folder/file system. One possibility you might try is M$ One Note if you have M$ Office.

Thank you.

As I said, I am not a rich guy. My budget for scanner is about $200 and $50 for software. I was actually considering Scansnap S1100 or Doxie One. Its just Doxie sounds little dodgy on how they handle customers, so inclined towards Scansnap, but not $400 piece.

I am not too sure how OneNote would help me organize pdfs. I use it for making notes.. I would prefer more visual style. I like Windows folder system too, but there are many bills that are categorized in various ways, like prescription bill goes under medical and HSA, for e.g. Tagging in this case would make my life easier.
