Set up p2p via ethernet, win 7 on both. Same passwords, sharing set but will not connecting. Trouble shoot says it's network issue.
1. Turned off Firewalls, no difference
2. Is it ok that both pc's are admin?
3. When it does connect, what should I expect to see on desktop?
Suggestions?

By peer to peer do you mean directly plug an ethernet cable from one computer into another? If so you have a couple of issues. Firstly you can't use a standard ethernet cable. You must use a crossover cable like one from here: ethernet crossover cable - Newegg.com

Second, you must must configure your "network" manually providing each computer with an ipaddress, a common subnet mask, and a default gateway. How to set that up requires more networking knowledge than most people know. You home router does that automatically and will allow you to use your existing network cable.

Sorry I didn't make it clear. Both are going to the router.

First off you need to set up shared folders then nothing will appear on the desktop but you can then browse the network and should see the shares on the other PC and be able to see files etc or you can map a drive etc

I have both pc's check marked for sharing documents, etc. I just don't think they're seeing each other. Again, message is that it's a network issue. IF there is a connection, how would I know?

On the computer that is on the bottom from the command prompt type in hostname. After that type in ping and put in the address above. Please copy and paste both outputs.

On the first computer do the same thing except ping this address. Also type in the command hostname. Please paste the results.

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.183
Also on each computer open up control panel > internet options > connections tab > lan settings. Make sure that the box Automatically detect settings is checked.

On the second computer you didn't type in ipconfig /all.

Neither pc would ping the other using ping and other's ip address. What do you mean by adding "hostname?"

I said to type hostname. Due you make sure each computer is set to receive the ipaddress automatically?

My Computers

But, what is the hostname? Or, do you mean to actually type "hostname" without the quotation marks?

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh int ipv6 reset

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

On 655D pc, though as admin and user "G" several of the lines responded "no user specified." Also needed to reboot after several lines completed. Also, ipconfig on both computers had /all, only each computer showed. That said, here is ipconfig for 655D:

What a mess... E6420 showed the 655D Home group but no files. Ran troubleshooter and it added a Home group with no name nor data. 655D has no home group. Both indicate possible firewall (Bitdefender) but I've allowed. Should I start over?
