Performance log for overheating or RAM problems?

Hello!

For the third time (it happens every five to ten years...), I had a computer that was rebooting out of nowhere on me. This time it was doing so when running a video conversion program. I took a stab that it was poor heat transfer from CPU to heat sink, got some thermal grease (compound) and resat my CPU, and problem solved.

I would like to know if there is an internal performance log that I could inspect that might define the problem - overheating, bad RAM, whatever - instead of my guessing. I have had similar with bad RAM and of course found that by either running diagnostics, pulling a chip or both, but it seems problems that have these as the solutions would be reasonable to leave a log entry and take the guess-work, or extra investigation, out of the loop.

Thoughts?

For a temperature log, a program like HWinfo64 well allow you to run a log on the system.
