Solved Permanently deleting gmail items using Outlook 2010 Shift Delete

I have Outlook 2010 and Windows 7. If I Delete an item in Outlook it goes into Deleted in Outlook and gmail which is fine. However if I Shift Delete it does not go into Deleted but remains in All Mail in both gmail and Outlook and this seems incorrect.

Any thoughts?

Why do you use Shift+Delete. I have never used it nor have I heard of it being used before. If Delete does what you want, just keep using it.

As I wrote, in Outlook Shift Delete removes the item but does not place it in the Deleted folder, which is what I want because I do not wish ever to see it again. However, it remains in gmail.

I use Outlook 2013, which I think is very similar to Outlook 2010. If you open "File", "Options" then select "Advanced". In the Outlook "Start & exit" tick the box to delete on Exit as I have done in the screen shot.
If you have that set & you use the Delete key only to remove an email it will be be sent to the Deleted folder although it may not show there as deleted, but it will be deleted when you exit.

Doing it this way should remove the email from Outlook & from Gmail as you are using the Delete only key & when you close Outlook the Deleted folder will be emptied.

Thanks for the reply but I am writing about Shift Delete which I want to work the same in gmail as in Outlook. Have you ever tried using Shift Delete in Outlook? (It seems to work as hoped with Outlook 2013 on my wife's laptop.)

No I have never used the Shift+Delete in Outlook, as it permanently removes the email immediately. If using the Delete key only, removes your email from Outlook & Gmail at the same time & then the email is deleted completely from Outlook on closing, why isn't this a satisfactory solution.

I prefer to use the Delete or X instead as you still have the chance to recover it if you change your mind. Of course as I have the Delete folder to clear on closing Outlook it will be permanently deleted then.

I receive two kinds of email: (a) those I read and want to keep but rather than cluttering up my Inbox I delete them which places them in my Deleted folder for future reference; (b) those which I never, ever, want to see again and I use Shift Delete for that ... but they stay around in gmail and hence in the All Mail folder.

I do hope that is now clear and I apologise for not making it more obvious at the start.

Thanks for that, it has certainly made it much clearer to me.

I have set up a folder that I call "Emails to keep" & I drag such emails to that folder & I delete the others I don't want, which means they go to the Deleted folder & then get completely removed when I close Outlook.

I find this suits me better as it does not matter if I empty the deleted folder by accident, as I will not lose the emails I want to keep.

Thanks Rander4 for that. Very good idea and is a possible solution (though I am bound to Delete some I want for a bit: old habits die hard!)

Thanks Nick. Yes I know what you mean about old habits, years of doing something one way can take a while to get the old brain computer to re program itself, but with persistence it can be done.
