Permissions issue with Win 7

Just one thing to be aware of with regards to Administrative shares - they may be switched off by default on Vista / Win7 as a security measure.

It's a simple registry fix to re-enable if that is what you wish

Also this is something that may not work at all if homegroup is active on win7

A bit of an update here. I'd forgotten why I shared the root on my laptop.. but with other issues which have developed since I did all these "fixes" I rediscovered the madness to my method... or is that method to my madness? oh well.

I use a backup/syncing program to backup my laptop hard drive. Without sharing the root, I have to setup individual profiles for each folder I wish to backup. Tedious. Much easier to share the root and within the program, tell it which files to save and which to ignore.

I also sync certain files between the laptop and main PC, such as my Quicken data files. However, with the changes I've made, I cannot sync to/from specific file locations in the laptop.

I have yet to figure out why my program says the network path cannot be found when Windows Explorer finds everything just fine.

I've experimented lately with Karen's Replicator.. and am finding the same issue but it is due to not sharing the root on the laptop. No quick fix to that short of sharing the root drive as I see it.

c:\ == C$
d:\ == D$
etc.

Sharing them again is not wrong but it's probably not necessary. Don't forget, you can have more than one share on a drive... For example I have the shares set up for movies, music, etc. but I use the admin shares (C$, D$, E$) for my backups.

It's really up to you and whatever works is ok...

Ok lets say you have this mythical folder on a machine named BIXBOX...

d:\my data\pictures\me.jpg

and you want to back it up remotely
Point your sync tool at...

\\BIXBOX\d$\my data\pictures\me.jpg

and you're there.

The whole UNC thing is really really simple....

\\<machine name>\<share name>\path to file

For example:

On BIXBOX you have a share named JoeJunk ... which actually points to d:\junk\joe
and you have a folder under that called "trash"...

Locally you would access that as

d:\junk\joe\trash

Using UNC you can access this as EITHER:

\\BIXBOX\d$\Junk\joe\trash <-- using the admin share
or
\\BIXBOX\JoeJunk\trash <-- through the user share

Now the interesting part about UNC paths... they work anywhere! It doesn't matter what machine you're on, even the same machine... a shared file is always available by it's unc name. I *never* map drives... I do everything by UNC names, it's just so much easier.

Thanks again for your assistance. I fixed the problem.

Somehow, by unsharing the root, I took out an element of the UNC file path which screwed up the filepath in my profiles. Turns out all I had to do was delete that element of each filepath and now all my profiles run correctly.

Where before I had \\laptop2\main drive\Quicken files, I now just have \\laptop2\Quicken files and the profiles run fine. I'm sure there's a reason for why it did what it did unbeknownst to me, at least it's fixed now.

Talk about unintended consequences!

And I'd completely forgotten about administrator file shares. Thanks so much for refreshing my memory!
