Have you tried logging into their Webmail/Online E-Mail page? Did they furnish you an E-Mail address for your account? If I go to live.com I get my Hotmail page, also now known as Outlook.com. Could be you need to use IMAP instead of POP3 for the Server setting in your E-Mail Client's Account settings. Your ISP should have the settings on their support pages.

I do appreciate your input Berton .... thank you.
The problem happened twice yesterday and I contacted Telstra (with whom I have a platinum contract) and they ran through a number of tests that were not conclusive and the current thinking is that my cable connection may be compromised in some way as it passes through a large magnolia tree and recent very high winds may have chafed it in some way so they are sending a technician to have a look tomorrow.
So when he is here I will discuss with him your thoughts.
I am far to old (87) to appreciate all the technicalities.
I shall be pleased to let you know the outcome.
Thanks again.
Joe

As promised Berton .... the technician arrived 10.30 am and ran a lot of tests which are listed between the times listed below;
2014-10-11 00:58:35 3-Critical 0x0501BD64 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
2014-10-11 01:00:27 4-Error 0x040D9A93 ToD request sent- No Response received
then after that he got up the pole on the street and found that the connection there had corroded badly so he fixed it and all is well.

That's good, it should last for awhile depending upon the humidity in your area. I had a problem with TV the other day and no signal at the box on the house, turned out someone had knocked over a junction box across the road and it pulled the coax out of the plug on the end of it.
