Have 14,000 photo's inside 400 folders all are viewed as 'sort by name' on pc, few years back i scanned 500+ photo's and placed them within 5 folders, all my photo's are given the same name as the folder that they are in & the PC will add (1), (2), (3) etc to each one, all was well but recently in one of the 5 folders the photo's will not display in there correct order ie; starts at (17) then (28), (107) & so on, no matter how many times i right click to 'sort by name' they will not move into that order in this one folder, any ideas ?

Have you verified that the file names are exactly the same except for the number in the end?

If you add a simple space, which can be difficult to see, the sort will be different:

Photo's (sort by name)

Hi Tookeri, these 400 photo's were taken over a 70 year span so when the i scanned them they were put into the 5 folders relating to a certan time frame ie; 1920-1940, when in the folder's they were moved around until i was happy with the order of them, then i would press 'select all' right click top left photo to rename them all to what i want and what should & did happen is all photo's have same file name + ( ) have checked the other 400 folders with photo's inside and they are all showing the correct order it is just this one folder ?

I understand. Did you try ThrashZone's suggestion? Maybe you have changed some settings just for this specific folder.

Hi ThrashZone, have tried reset defaults still the same, but have viewed the photo's in 'Details' with date showing in top tabs and found that the order the photo's are in now is the date order when they were 1st scanned back in 2006, even when i untick the date option the photo's wont go into name order but will only stay in the date order. It look like this is the only folder where the scanned photo's were moved around before re-nameing them but does not explain why cant view in 'Name order'

In Details view I always click the headings to sort, not right click. Probably won't make any difference but you could try.

We could try a sort in a command prompt to see if that's any different from explorer.
Open a command prompt (cmd.exe)
Then run dir "C:\Users\exampel\Pictures" /O:N /p
But replace the folder within the "" with the path to the problematic folder

Hi,
Interesting did you use the .bat file offered by Brink ?
You could select all of the files and copy them to a new folder inside one of the folders acting right and see if they will follow ?

Hi Tookeri / ThrashZone, solved ! How stupid am I ? As i said before 400 photo's in 5 folders relating to time periods but somehow 20 random photo's from folder 'Work 1980-1989' had been moved into folder 'Work 1989-2005' because all these 400 photo's are called 'Work' followed by the year frame i had not noticed so 'sort by date' was working fine it was the 20 random photo's that messed it all up, sorry ThrashZone should have checked that one out but was so sure they was in the same place where they were put in 2006. Still have to work out how they moved over. Anyway many thanks for your help guys, a lesson learned.
