Seriously this is the easiest thing to do actually.

Download psicon.dll

From : psicon.dll download - free dll files

Place it in c:\program files\common files\adobe\shell

If the shell directory isn't there create it.

now open notepad and copy and paste the next few lines:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs]

"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]

@="{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}]

@="Photoshop Icon Handler"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}\InProcServer32]

@="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"

"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
Save the file as psdreg.reg

Now double click the file and then click yes. Now just either restart or kill and restart the "explorer.exe" process.

go look at any .psd and you will see thumbnail ;-)

fxf97l.jpg

If i did like you said, what would be possible reasons for this not to work?

I copied the text into notepad and saved using ANSI and as a .reg file, i am using x64 win7 so i put the shell folder in both the x64 and native program files folders.

I have photoshop cs5 installed...

Hi sorry took so long to get back. I lol'd because there always has to be someone with a problem.... Well today I joined you with the same problem. I got a new laptop with win 7 ultimate x64 preinstalled ran my little fix AND IT DID NOT WORK......

But I found out why quick enought see below:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs]

"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001

"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

Needs to be changed. In the 64bit you have two programfile directories. the second one is "C:\Program Files (x86)"

the dll file needs to go in that programfiles directory and the reg file needs to reflect this change also

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs]

"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001

I couldn't get the PSICON.DLL thing to work on Windows 7 x64 even with the revised regedit. I did all the stuff like clearing the thumbnail cache, setting image previews in PS to always save, opening and re-saving some PSD files, putting psicon.dll in both adobe shell directories, but I still had the regular PSD-PS thumbnails.

So I downloaded the PSD codec from Ardfry Imaging and that worked just fine. It was a real treat to be able to see what was in all those forgotten about PSD files that I couldn't be bothered to open.

I couldn't get the psicon.dll thing working either (windows 7 pro 32 bit) but the Ardry worked a treat!! Thank you for the alternative. Now I can see my psd thumbnails again!

FastStone Image Viewer shows PSD thumbnails

Of course the only problem with the Ardfry Imaging codec is that it is only free for 15 days. After that you'll have to come up with $19.95 to pay for it.

If your budget is a bit tight you can always install FastStone Image Viewer which you can use as an alternative to Windows Explorer for viewing and working with image files. It is Freeware and shows thumbnails for all the regular image files along with thumbnails for PSD, TGA, PNG, ICO, etc.

It is not as slick as Windows Explorer but it does the job of letting you see what is in the PSD files without having to open them.

I can attest to the fact that this doesn't work as well. Tried it with psicon.dll in both "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)", and altered the registry edit accordingly. Restarted the computer both times, and nothing.

My guess is that it might have something to do with the fact that the psicon.dll is from version 7, where as in my case (and in most others) I have CS3 (v10) installed. So the older dll cannot render newer PSD files from later versions.

Free psd thumbs

There is a freeware program called Sage Thumbs that you can use. It will generate thumbnails for .psd and other rare image formats in windows explorer. It used to only work with XP but now works with Windows 7 32 & 64 bit.

You can get it here SageThumbs 2.0.0.12 But you will need to translate the page with google or some other browser - it's not in english.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass it along!

Thankyou so much for that link Tagen! I registered only to thankyou because prior to finding this program I was using a different one that, after it's trial, would open a prompt to register the program and forced me to wait 10 seconds before I could close it every time I opened up any program that viewed any thumbnail :( I don't have a job at the moment so I couldn't afford to register the program (plus people who put timers on simple things like closing windows I despise quite greatly - so I refused to pay for anything this individual put out anyway - it's one thing to stop the program from working after a trial but quite another to hijack my explorer windows with windows I cannot close when I want to)

Anyway I just really wanted to thankyou for sharing!!

Sage Thumbs ... now works with Windows 7 32 & 64 bit.

Sorry to say it doesn't always show PSD thumbnails on my Windows 7 64-bit. Sometimes it works, but mostly I still get the old blue PSD thumbnails. Guess I'll have to stay with FS Image Viewer which still works fine.

Sage thumbs works for the most part. I am running Win7 x64. I have noticed sometimes a few of the thumbs dont show up.

I am tired of people suggesting pay software for this issue. We shouldn't have to pay 20 bucks to see thumbnails in explorer.

Couldn't agree more Bro. Guess we have the monopolists over at Microsoft to blame for that. Surely they could spend a few hours to add thumbnails for Photoshop software which is in such widespread use.

Ok everyone, SageThumbs is the way to go. It works on EVERY PSD. In order to get it to work with larger psds you just have to go into the options and increase the maximum size. For example I had a few psds over 10 mbs that were not showing thumbnails, after increasing the limit to 50 mb, it works flawless on every PSD.

Its FREE and you don't have to pay no stinking 20 bucks. Thank the developers for working on this, and if you can contribute a small donation on there page.

PS thanks Microsoft for not providing key functionality to every designer out there who uses windows. Its business practices like this, that make users flock to OSX.

error code 0x80070005

I followed the instructions from the post by b33z but kept getting error code 0x80070005.

I found the reason - I wasn't running the command from the Command Prompt with Administrator Priviledges.
All I had to do was right click on the command prompt and run as Administrator and it all work!

Thanks very much!

Hi everyone, as you'll see this is my first post, so please be gentle with me.

I have Photoshop CS3 installed on my Win 7 Home Edition Laptop and randomly one day my plain blue icons changed to images (thumbnails) I dont remember installing anything specific to make this happen, it just started. I thought it was a windows update or something.

Recently i rebuilt my laptop as she started to get a little too slow in her old age. But guess what, i now have the blue icons back and cant get the thumbs to work again.

I know this dont help, but i never did any of the things suggested in previous posts to make mine start showing thumbs, but I obviously did something. It is really annoying as i have hundreds of PSD files and have to open them to see what it is. Was awesome when i had an image to id the file i wanted to work on.

I'd install SageThumbs if I were you (http://code.google.com/p/sagethumbs/). Just remember to take cloves' advice and go to the options to increase the 'Maximum Size of Image File" to something that is big enough to cover the largest of your .PSD files. You'll soon have all your .psds showing up as thumbnails and it won't cost you diddly squat.

The registry hack suggested above did not work for me but the SageThumbs software did work. So thank you for suggesting it. I would recommend that others just use SageThumbs to begin with and save the hassle of messing with the registry and dll file.

there is a software called icaros that shows thumbnails of video files , it can be configured to add file extensions.
i already have sage thumbs installed and i wondered if the icaros software could be used to add .PSD to it .
here is the download page, if anyone who cares to try it and see let me know .thanks.

Icaros is thumbnailing software. Upon installation, and with 1st use of the application, if you simple click 'Activate Icaros'. it will default to thumbnailing MKV's (10bit files too) and OGM files. It is capable of thumbnailing just about any file by adding its extension(s) to the optional filetypes box and re-activating Icaros. The only filetype not handled by Icaros is Realmedia files.

MysticThumbs

Make sure you get the correct x86 or x64

Mystic thumbs - been using this all along in conjunction with ghostscript (which install automatically with mysticthumbs.

I use PS, AI, FW, Maya, Visio, and PDFs, word & text files, EPSs and a bunch of other graphics stuff as part of my daily workflow... Mystic Thumbs shows them all as high quality previews even as extra large icons.

It was about £12 I think, updated fairly regularly, and good support direct from the dev - well worth it

I'm in no way associated with the developer btw
