Picasa has hijacked my scanner button

Now here is a question: Picasa has hijacked my scanner button. Whenever I press the button on my scanner, it opens Picasa. I would like it to open Irfanview or my scanner's default application. I have tried the autoplay options, I have reset them to defaults. I have uninstalled/reinstalled Picasa. I have checked with Canon and there is nothing in the scanner's software that will allow me to configure it. There used to be a scanners and cameras applet in control panel, but it is no more with Windows 7. The only way to get my scanner's button back is to uninstall Picasa, which I don't want to do.

Any ideas?

I have it set to view animated GIFs only. I like Windows viewer just fine, but it doesn't do animated GIFs. I would love to specify the application for my scanner button press without messing up my file associations.

Picasa Scanner Button Problem

I had the same problem. The following helped:

Open Registry Editor, search for "STIProxyEvent". There you should find keys for your scanner and one for Picasa. Delete the Picasa related key. I found 2 settings which I deleted, now Canon Tool Box is directly opened when scanner buttons are pushed. I have no idea if I destroyed something else, so take my advice at your own risk.

These are the keys I deleted (German Version):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StillImage\Events\STIProxyEvent\{AF3EE90E-B809-468A-A9D4-ADFCA8A1978D}]
"Name"="Picasa3"
"Desc"="Bilder auf den Compute"
"Icon"="C:\\Program Files\\Googl"
"Cmdline"="C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Picasa3\\Picasa3.exe /StiDevice:%1 /StiEvent:%2"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\StillImage\Events\STIProxyEvent\{AF3EE90E-B809-468A-A9D4-ADFCA8A1978D}]
"Name"="Picasa3"
"Desc"="Bilder auf den Compute"
"Icon"="C:\\Program Files\\Googl"
"Cmdline"="C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Picasa3\\Picasa3.exe /StiDevice:%1 /StiEvent:%2"

Thank you so much for posting this. I have the exact same problem. It is infuriating. I used the Devices and Printers in Control Panel, Events tab, to set the Start button on the Canon MF4100 printer to the MF Toolbox 4.9 (approrpriately named ;), the app that came with the scanner (such as it is, I can make it do what I want, albeit with difficulty but less difficulty than using Picasa for this purpose). Well, what do you know? It doesn't take affect, and then if I do a restart, voila! Picasa has grabbed the Start button again. How obnoxious this is! Quoth Google: don't be evil(?!)
