Earphone alternative has disappeared completely from Playback devices. It doesn't show at all, neither when I tick inactivated devices nor when I tick disconnected devices.
Help needed urgently Tx

Is this a USB connected headphone or is it connected with a 3.5mm plug?

Are the internal laptop's speakers muted when you plug in the headset?

Also, what is the model number of the Dell?

This is the complete list and status of playback options (I have translated from Swedish so the terminology might be incorrect)

3. Loudspeaker

Inactivated
Comment: Isn't this strange? 3 is exactly as 2)

The USB Loudspeaker does not use the PC's sound. It converts the digital audio data internally in the speaker system.

The High Definition Audio inactivated is one reason the headset will not work.

According to the Dell downloads, this has IDT sound. Suggest you install this and see if it helps. The "High Definition Audio Device" suggests that the generic, basic function, Windows installed sound driver. The IDT driver may fix the headset problem.
Here is the link to the Dell downloads. This driver is listed for Vista 32 bit , but the driver is Win 7 32 bit and 64 bit compatible.

By activating the connected loudspeaker symbol I managed to get sound into my headphones. Can't understand why I did test that to start with but I guess I was focusing on the fact that the headphone symbol had disappeared.

Although you have the headset working, I would still install the correct sound driver that I linked at Dell. It will give you more features. The Dell driver should also have "Stereo Mix" and you can set that as default Recording Device. If you ever want to record streaming audio from the Internet such as YouTube or some other source you must have Stereo Mix to be able to record.

I tried to download the two files under Sound at the Dell link that you provided but I wasn't successful. Neither is compatible with Windows 7. They seem to be designed for Windows XP. Am I doing something wrong here?
Below I have inserted information on the two files that I found at the Dell site.
