PlayStation 3 Owners?

AlexT2889

Windows Whiz
I just got my PlayStation 3 Slim 120GB on September 3rd and LOVING every moment of it! This is also my first major purchase with my own money. On my next paycheck I'm gonna be getting a Sony BRAVIA S-Series 32' Full-HD 1080p HDTV from J&R Online for $569 to go along nicely with my PS3 for BRAVIA Sync :D.

My PSN ID is: Alex_Tebo89

No games yet, but I'm using PS Home, and multiple Demos like GRiD, DiRT 2 Demo, Skate, Skate 2, etc.

Who else here has PS3 and plays online? I wanna start a GRiD private match and get away from the noobs who crash and run us off the road everytime.

I have both a 360 and New PS3 slim. I have downloaded Wipeout HD for PS3 and it's fantastic! Also playing resistance and big little planet.
My only issue with the PS3 is the control pad is not as comfortable as the 360s control pad IMO the left thumb stick is better positioned on the 360 and it's just bigger and sits better.

I have a full HD but am waiting for the ultra HD with a massive 2000- 3000!! (Instead of 1080p.) Also uses HDMI 1.4

My first build!
I happen to be a 360 owner. I previously had a PS and a PS2, but in May of 2006 when I was looking for a new console the PS3 wasn't out yet and I knew that in Nov 2006 when they came out it would be impossible to find one, so I went with the 360. My original console did end up dying on me, but it was almost 3 years old. However, I just bought another one because of my investment in games and the like made moving to another console too costly.

As far as TV goes, good luck on your purchase. I personally had a very bad experience with Sony standing behind a TV that i bought in 2003 and I won't buy another of their television products anymore. I switched from an LCD to a Panasonic Plasma and I was blown away. Plasmas just outperform in my opinion. More natural colors, better black levels, and image retention has been a non-issue for me. Oh yeah, typically plasmas are cheaper as well...because of lower cost to manufacturer and fewer defects in the panels over LCD. But I digress, I'm sure either TV will look fantastic for your setup.

Unless the input source changes I dont' see the point. Let me also say that I am believer that given the same input source being displayed on a properly calibrated 720p display and 1080p display looks exactly the same to the human eye as we cannot discern detail at this level. Let me restate this before somebody goes crazy. It's the input signal being at 480, 720 or 1080 which makes the difference. The display output being scaled down to 720 will not show any discernable difference on an equivalent properly calibrated display.

To previous posters above:

I've always been a Sony fan, along with my dad since his first "purchased" TV was a Sony and it lasted almost 25 years and I even played my Sega Genesis on it with no problems in the early 90's, we have 1970s-80's Sony CD players/cassette players that STILL work and are hooked up to our Sony 5.1 surround sound system. I've had both PS1 and PS2, the PS1 had NO issues while the PS2 died on me 6 months after purchase (but I blame my friend since he used wet cloth on top and I found the warranty sticker removed and damaged since I lived a school dorm in high school). On the otherhand, we had a 1993 Mitsubishi 32 inch CRT TV that was TOP OF THE LINE and the tube died out in mid-2002, We got a Sylvania 26 CRT from 2002-2004 then it started acting up and I'm using it as backup for PS3 till I get my HDTV, we have a 26 inch CRT box "HD" (I call it HD because it's a flat screen box design with 2 Component cable connections on the back) from 2005 and already the picture is taking a dump. So I'm gonna be moving the Sylvania back into where Philips TV is and enjoy my new Sony HDTV at last :D.

My dad keeps telling me to go with Sony and I do like the BRAVIA line, with the additional benefit of the XMB UI matching the PS3 XMB UI along with BRAVIA Sync on PS3 Slim. I might be getting a Sony BRAVIA 5.1 surround sound system with BRAVIA Sync to complete my dream video game paradise.

I do have a huge question between 720p and 1080p, I've noticed many of PS3 games are modeled for 720p HD support and not 1080p, usually the only PS3 games that take advantage of 1080p are direct from Sony developers like NBA 09, Gran Turismo 5, MLB The Show, etc etc. But I also want to be "future proof" and not regret my purchase since I'm not making much money and wanna make it last long term. Basically, the only games I'll be buying for PS3 are PS3 exclusives since they take advantage of the full power unlike 3rd party developers do since they focus more on Xbox 360, Rockstar Games even stated that GTA 4 Liberty City was SUPPOSE to be MUCH bigger and realistic than what is in stores now, but because of the limitations of 360 HD-DVD format, they had to compromise for both systems to be "equal". But is it HONESTLY DEEPLY THAT DIFFERENT BETWEEN 720P AND 1080P? I ask because I'm trying to research a lot in short amount of time and there are many different perspective answers.

Simply amazing how the PlayStation 3 turned out this generation, people shoved their way into game stores to get the PS1 and PS2 and could give a flying F about the Xbox or Dreamcast, yet they were both far superior game consoles of the time. Xbox 360 comes along, EVERYONE must get it, yet then the RROD and E74 Errors pop up. Gamers never really learn from their mistakes, keep buying 360 knowing of its 54% failure rating and time wasted waiting for it to be fixed. PlayStation 3 comes along, everyone ignores it... Yet it's FAR cheaper, and FAR superior in EVERYWAY compared to Xbox 360. I don't get it.

Oh yea, PSN Online is now way better than Xbox LIVE, Firmware 3.00 has enabled many things that LIVE can do...and then some. Plus...it's FREE.

I actually have all the consoles and hand-helds. Before someone makes a comment, no I am not rich (far from it) but I am very good at finding a bargain and budgeting...eventhough video games are a losing investment. Anyhow my favorites of all of them would have to be the PSP as a hand-held (when it is hacked and because of Dissidia FF) and the PS3 as a console. I will admit though that the only time I turn on either the 360 or the PS3 is just for an update as of late. The Wii would be the same if I hadn't hacked it also;). All in all my PSP gets the most mileage (the DS gets as much when I play a new game on my R4 for it)

But is it HONESTLY DEEPLY THAT DIFFERENT BETWEEN 720P AND 1080P? I ask because I'm trying to research a lot in short amount of time and there are many different perspective answers.

Honestly, I feel there is absolutely no difference whatsoever between 720p and 1080p when it comes to the display. It's only the source material that matters. Here is a nice forum post on the AVS forums more or less backing up what I am saying;
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=767929&pp=30

I recently upgraded my television and cost was not a factor really in my decision and I went into the store and bought the Panasonic 720p plasma display. The guy at the store didn't even try to recommend anything else because it was obvious that I knew my stuff. I used the money saved on my tv to buy a blu-ray player, an HDMI cable and some movies. Still had money left over.

I've hung around in the AV world and on various forums and am pretty well read on the subject. Most people who try to convince you otherwise base it strictly on "more has to equal better". But the limitations of human vision don't necessarily mean that you will be able to actually see this difference.

The only time I recommend a higher resolution will be if you are hooking up a computer to the display. That is really the only time I would recommend going higher than 720p. If it's just for HDTV and movies....paying more for 1080p is wasting money.

@ Zidane - sounds about right. (keep the receipt j.i.c)

i think the only reason i dont own any consoles is that the fact of buy one, foe just one game (ps3 - metal gear 4, 360 - ...idk) is kinda dumb. most of the 'good' ones make their way to PC anyway. plus i still dont understand what these 'achievements' and 'trophies' are for... someone tried to explain it to me, but he was unclear of what you actually 'win' (which im assuming is nothing).

but if i do get a console, it'll probably be a 360, despite the 54% fail ratio.

Another 360 owner here, although I've only used it a handful of times in the last 9 months.

On the plus side, there less chance of it getting RRoD :D
lmao...just last week a good friend of mine had his 360 RRoD. I decided to let him borrow mine since he is an avid 360 player. If mine RRoDs in the process than oh well...I won't cry over it. I like the 360 just fine but not enough to be fanatical about it. The only thing I am a little bit fanatical about would be the PSP. If you happen to get one and you like to venture onto the dark side of things:geek::p:devil2:...hack it and see truly the beast that lies within:D
