Possible budget gaming PC build?

Chaps,

Sorry to butt in on the post, but was wondering what your experience are with SATA HDD's? I've always used Western Digital WD10EARS 1TB but have found issues with at least 3. I was thinking of trying Samsung next...what are your thoughts?

I get my gear from www.allneeds.com.au ... perhaps they just went through a bad patch?

Golden

I have 4 Samsung F4 2TB Drives and haven't run into a problem yet. I've only had them for a few months so far though.

I cant speak personally about that particular model but I have several WD HDs across 3 machines and they have always been very reliable.

All of mine are the AAKS models though.

In fact, WD are typically all I buy.

Either one that is closer and has stock.

To answer smarteyeball, no i probably won't be doing crossfire stuff until wayyyyyy down the track, so it would be easier to just get the minimum until later.

Stick with your current proposed build - enjoy it and then upgrade if/when you feel the time is right

Overall, you wont be disappointed :)

I just removed a 2 TB WD EADS (green) from my machine because it was adding 40+ secs to my boot time. It also ran pretty damn warm in comparison to my Seagate 7200.12 and Samsung F1's. (ironic considering it was supposed to be a 'slow green' drive )

My two Sammys are now 2years old and haven't skipped a beat. They are also the coolest running drives I've ever had.

By all accounts the F3/F4's are even better. I wouldn't hesitate using them.

Hell! That's exactly my experience with my WD's - I'm convinced we are getting dodgy builds down under. I'll give the F3's or F4's a twirl - thanks.

I have been told by quite a few others to steer clear of the WD green line. AAJS (8MB cache blue), AAKS (16MB cache blue) and AALS (32MB cache black) drives have never given me a problem.

I have 2 AAJS drives that are pushing 3 or 4 years now, and one AAKS about a year old.

the samsung f3's are great - can't speak about any of the other drives mentioned.

(a new ocz ssd should be arriving sometime today (), and my f3 will be relegated to a storage drive, and i expect years more service out of it in that role.)

ideally for a gaming pc, i would go for a wired connection. faster, more reliable, less interference, maybe less ping...

but maybe your location precludes such an option. :(

Good enough. You probably won't find any benefit from using a Wireless n anyway

Yeah, my router doesn't do Wireless n, so g should be alright.
You're not considering this for gaming are you?

No, I probably won't be doing online gaming too much. This will just be for internet browsing and stuff. I will drag a cable out to my computer if I was to do online gaming.
