Depends on the time it has been inactive - I know that Microsoft, and all other email providers, regularly Purge unused accounts after a set period of inactivity.
The only thing you can do is to go to Outlook.com - Microsoft free personal email and try to log-in using the old account and password, (Live.com is just a redirect to outlook.com). It may allow you to gain access. If not the last chance would be to contact Microsoft and see if it's possible to restore the account, (the failure to connect to the account may actually start this communication for you )
