Impressive, peaceful!

I am going to have to keep trying different combinations. I've decided that if I can get a 50% overclock (5.1GHz) I'll declare victory - and hopefully regain my senses.

Yep. I backed off to the previous OC level and am sitting at 42C after a game of AOEII. Not the most CPU-intensive program out there, but not "idle", either.

I can't get mine fully stable above 4GHz. Had it as high as 4.25GHz but it would blue screen every now and then. Just didn't get the best chip I guess but I'm very happy with it and my Phanteks (and all my case fans) keeps everything nice and cool

Mark your CPU core volts are pretty high, you could try a NB volts bump to see if the would help. If it is possible keep the HT link around 2000MHz.

I've got the CPU voltage as low as I can. Any lower it won't boot (the NB is pretty high as well) I think I just got unlucky with this chip and I'm waiting for Pile Driver chips before I upgrade

You mean like the 79C I hit after an hour of Prime95 at these settings?

Apparently my new ASUS board will automatically adjust your core voltage for you - not always in a conservative way, either. If I can figure out how to limit that to something a little less scary I might try for 5GHz.

Your Tcase max temp is 72.6°C. add 5°C for core temps, your max core temp is 77.6°C.

You will see many OC sites going way over this, so it is a conservative number from Intel.
Have read where Intel can get info from the CPU for the max temp it has been ran at, if the warranty is ever needed.
Evidently they don't use that to void the warranty, according to some posts.

Motherboard auto voltage is notorious for over-volting.
You should always manually adjust your CPU voltage when OC'ing.
Back it down until it won't pass Prime95 or IBT.
1.584v is very high, you should be able to get around peaceful's 1.368v, or lower

I believe the TJ Max is 100c for your CPU. You reached a max temp of 57. I'd think getting over 70c would start to be a concern. If it approached that with an OC, you'd be looking for a better cooling solution if you regularly pushed it. A Guy

I don't plan to oc it much. ATM I'm at 3.0GHz, just 300MHz oc.
And thanks for the answer. Maybe I'll buy new cooler if I plan to oc it.

They seem a bit warm but not dangerous. From what I find your max Tcase temp is 74.1C and your max temp would be just a bit higher. I think you can give an overclock and keep an eye on temps.

EDIT: From Bill's info you are just fine at stock speed with those temps. I'm a wildman and I'd no be too concerned unless your temps would get to 75C. Like he said that is a stress test and normal use will be a lot cooler.

I'm sitting at 1.38 right now. I'm going to finish up a few more tests and see if I can shave a little more off. I backed off the 4.9GHz I had before but am currently at 4.62GHz with the new lower voltage.

On this i7-960; don't use XMP it drives the cpu vcore to high and their for hot. Max is 1.375 as per Intel. XMP will drive it over 1.40 volts and very hot quickly. I presume if you have enough cooling you can do that. The memory controller is on chip so if I get this chip to hot the memory takes a dump and the computer shuts down. Some day when I get in the mood I will tinker with it some more. At the present time the motherboard RMA from Asus took care of the ram problem with a very old bios and a new board. That make me happy. At the present I'm running cool, quiet, and quick and I'm happy.
NOT in the mood to change things. Maybe later. I was thinking of Corsair H100 but they made it in a fashion that it doesn't fit in the top of my Corsair 600T with push pull fans well from what I can tell. To do more means I need better cooling. I have got a ton of money in this thing already. All the stories of poor case cooling in the Corsair 600T does not show up with me. Great cooling hear with a little common seance. Well I have been long wind-did.

You might consider the H80, smaller footprint radiator than the H100, but thicker.
Same CPU unit and electronics.

Not nearly as low as I'm comfortable with under full load. I am using the Corsair H80 and have the fan set at the middle setting - full speed is just too loud.

My room is hot right now - 80F. Maybe I'll try it again with the windows open.

I was right around 40C at stock speed. I just built the rig about three weeks ago and was careful with the thermal paste, etc. I'm sitting at 42C right now with the overclock.

I've heard good things about those. I will definitely consider a pair of the.

By the way, I followed Corsair's advice about using two fans in a Push-Pull with the intake end at the back of the case. I wasn't to sure about having the hot air from the CPU blowing into the case, but figured the 200mm fan exhausting out the top would take care of it. Is that how you set up your H80?
