A SITD (shot in the dark) could the HD and AC97 audio connectors/headers be flim-flammed?
I accidentally found out my front panel had a USB short when I broke the plastic and got a new one. USB worked fine then.

Put the pair of Noctua fans A Guy recommended on the H80 today. They are as quiet and effective as advertised.

...When you apply the paste next time, after you are done, remove it and take a picture and post it here, I'm sure you will get lots of advice.

If you have any paste coming out the sides of the CPU you have too much.
I put a very thin layer on the CPU and cooler, then a small dab or small line, depending on the cooler type. As per the link below.

Check this tutorial/pictorial on applying thermal paste, the pictures will help.

Sorry, I did not get a picture. (No camera...) When I removed the H80 for the fan replacement I did look it over with a magnifying glass. It looks just like the pictures that IC Diamond's website said were "correct". No extra goop, no blank areas, no bubbling indicating air pockets. My new temps might be a degree or two lower, but nothing dramatic, and still in the low 40s.

I also replaced my pair of 1TB storage drives with a pair of 2TB drives, since the old ones were about 85% full. I've been merrily transferring all of my dirty pictures data over and the CPU has been around 10% usage, so the temps I mentioned above are a little higher than idle. I expect to give it the Prime95 treatment sometime tomorrow.

I also purchased two Noctua fans to put on a Hyper EVO cooler. I hooked one up to a spare Molex connector to test the airflow and noise. They come with two resisters to lower RPMs, one slow and one slower still. I couldn't tell any difference in them. I was reading the box for a clue. It took me several minutes to find there is a flap on the back which opens and has the info. These are great fans and take a long time to stop after power is off meaning they must have a really good bearing inside.

If you have occasion to call Noctua, don't even suggest they change the color. They get indignant. That is their trademark. Don't ever believe anyone who says they will start making different color fans.

Yes those chips are known to run hot. When I get in the mood I think I will put a Corsair H80 in and see what I can do. It seem like I got one of those chips that clocks good. Believe me this chip gets hot fast if I get carried away with the cpu vcore volts.

Just swapped out the Coolermaster CPU fan with a PWM Noc. The CM fan had quite a drone, and ran at 1900 RPM all the time. The Noc has a max of 1400, and is running at 1250 and is much quieter. Temps are unchanged. Just waiting on the GPU radiator to get rid of that annoyance, and my PC will be much quieter.

It sits on my desk an arms length away, otherwise I wouldn't hear it at all. The Antec tri-cools on low were not that bad, but as soon as the boot video appeared, the CM CPU fan really spooled up. Happy with the result for the expense. A Guy

When I first started using Noctua fans, I also thought they were the ugliest damn thing I'd seen.

But several years later I actually like the look of them now :huh:

It takes take time to get over the colour. Only a year or two

For those who have black interior cases and nothing but noctuas, I think that setup looks pretty damn good. Much better than you'd think it would be.

Patrick, my case will have blue LEDs inside so the "puke" effect will be somewhat lessened. Actually they look better in hand than in pictures...a little bit.

Sounds like the coverage is good.
What is your ambient temp?
I've noticed the water tank is sensitive to ambient temp.

The mounting bracket might be too loose or too tight.

I have a digital desktop thermometer which usually varies between 77F and 81F. I know that it's actually lower than that in the room, or I would be uncomfortable. I just moved it to the floor next to the side intake fan on the case and it went up about a degree almost immediately.

The mounting bracket might be too loose or too tight.

I don't know how it could be either. The base plate screws are finger tight (as recommended by Corsair) and I tighten the waterblock screws until snug. I worked with hand tools for years before my current deskbound student situation and have a good feel for when something is "just right". (Learned the hard way when I was starting out by having crap fall off or by stripping screws a few times.)

Just rechecked the thermometer (still on the floor) and it's risen another degree while I was typing this post. I know there is good air circulation in the room. I have two computers, four monitors (LCD) and two laser printers in here (generally in sleep mode), plus I run a medium sized air filter (allergies) and have a table fan exhausting heat out the door and down the hallway. I'm going to open the window for a few minutes (32F outside at the moment) and see how much the temperature drops. If I'm not back in ten minutes, send a dog with a keg of brandy because it means I have frozen nearly to death. (On second thought, I already have a dog - just send the brandy.)

Interesting hour that turned into. The quick version:

Room temp dropped from 77F to 67F
CPU temp dropped from 40C to a low of 25C
Ran Prime95 through all ten tests uses all 8 Cores (4 Cores + 4 HT) and topped out at 60C. When I ran it for less time yesterday with the windows closed it hit 75C.
Stopped Prime95 and temp dropped faster than usual.
Shut windows 20 minutes ago. Room up to 71F; CPU at 34C.

Conclusion: The computer cooling system works fine, my room is just too darn hot.

This looks like a PEBKAC or a PICNIC induced error :busted: difficult to diagnose and even harder to solve. Brandy might be the only remedy
