Potential 64 bit problem?

Hello I recently built a desktop pc (8 gig ram, 460 gtx GPU, 3.4 ghz cpu, 600w psu) and decided to get windows 7 64 bit OS.

My problem is that the computer runs slower than it should, especially at start up. When first booted up it loads to my desktop very quickly, but for around 5 minutes it is pretty much frozen. After the initially start up problem, it runs OK, but I feel it should be faster with such a fresh install. Programs I have downloaded so far are ventrilo, steam, itunes, and google chrome.

Games such as bf: bad company 2 and supreme commander run fine on high settings.

I would just like to know if 64 bit is causing these slowdowns, and if there is fix for this, or I should downgrade to a 32 bit version and see if the problem persists.

WIN | RESMON | ENTER

WIN is the key with microsoft flag on top.

Keep an eye on the CPU and Memory tabs to see if anything there is unusual.

Also download, install and run CCleaner.
Run both the Cleaner and Registry portions thereof.

Afterwards, run following:
LIST OF STARTUP PROGRAMS USING CCLEANER


CCleaner | Tasks icon | Startup tab | click on Save to text file button (bottom right side)

Using the PAPER CLIP icon in the top panel of a Message Reply window, attach the .txt file generated by CCleaner.

You can also perform a clean boot to see what is causing the problem:

Might also run Soluto, and see if it identifies the culprit (can always uninstall after)

I've found that after deleting Soluto that I had to use Autoruns to get all of its fingers out of the pie.

Sorry for such a late reply, I spent all last night configuring a 10 year linksys wireless pci adapter to work with windows 7.
Attached is the ccleaner start up file, thanks for the help gentleman.

WIN | MSCONFIG | STARTUP tab | uncheck ALL except for:
Ralink Wireless Utility.lnk C:\Program Files (x86)\RALINK\Common\RaUI.exe

RESTART your computer.

Don't worry. You haven't deleted or disabled anything. You've simply told windows not to run those programs at startup time.

Ok according to Soluto, steam was adding 14 seconds to the boot process... any reason why? Disabling some of the processes definitely helped with the speed. Are there any programs to show if ram or cpu are working properly?

Ok it seems steam is the main culprit... any past problems with steam compatibility with windows 7 64 bit??

Investigate the various tabs.

Now to test your memory.
The easiest way, and the program is much better than its predecessors, is
WIN | MEMORY DIAGNOSTIC | ENTER

To test your CPU, Prime95.
Be forewarned that Prime will drive your temps up as it works and overworks your cpu.

is there anyway to have 32 bit and 64 OS on the same harddrive? Im thinking of getting the 32 bit and testing to see if I have the same random slowdown problems.

Yes (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...and-if-i/e5099d54-3d67-48c3-a77e-8a3ca1b2c994), but I have 64 bit with steam and my computer has no slowdown. Although you can go into steam settings and force it not to load upon startup. Whenever I start steam on my computer, it opens very quickly but takes maybe 4-8 seconds to open a game (not a long time).

If you use 32bit, 4GB of your RAM will basically be wasted. 64bit IS faster, but I recommend some more testing from these excellent folks to truely find out what the problem is. You could always try a reinstall as a last resort.

Make sure you have installed all drivers and important windows updates

Steam, even manually started, is extremely slow in general. I know my cpu and gpu drivers are up to date, and Ill check to see if there are any windows 7 updates available.

Interesting, I use Your Uninstaller to uninstall programs, and I find no traces of Soluto. A Guy
