Solved Power supply and JPWR2

I am building a computer using a Antec 430W power supply and a MSI Z77A-G41 mobo.

The CPU power connector on the board (JPWR20) has 4 +12V positions with grounds. The power supply does not have a 4 (8) position connector--it only has a 3 (6) position connector.

Do I have to buy a different power supply or will I be able to use the connector with just 3 +12V supplies?

(I guess this should have been under Hardware and Devices)

You will need to have an EPS12v power supply (ATX12v/EPS12v) to have the 8 pin CPU connector.
Sounds like the Antec 430 is just an ATX12v supply.

And no, you can't get by with just a 6 pin connector.

Yes, that looks to have the 8-pin EPS CPU connector.
What Layback Bear is getting to is that the Corsair has only one PCI-E video card connector and 430 watts. If you are going to be using a video card that requires 2 PCI-E connectors and more power then you will be stuck again.

Give that man an answer!

This is not a gaming machine. It will just have the Intel (3470) 2500 integrated graphics--no separate video card.

I appreciate the info that I would only be able to upgrade with a card requiring one connector.

This does bring up the question as to whether a cheap video card with DVI would give better performance than the VGA which this mobo has. Does DVI video outperform VGA?

VGA is analog output while DVI and HDMI are both digital output. Digital output has some advantages.
But performance is largely due to the power of the graphics engine built into the motherboard or in the video card. So you need to compare the specs of the graphics engine in the motherboard to any 'cheap' video card you may be thinking of. The motherboard could outperform a cheap card.

Another thought.
If later you would decide to install a quality video card you would also have to buy another power supply. If you stepped up a little bit in the power supply now you would be covered for things you might add to your system later.
Please keep in mind; you can't have to much power supply.
A power supply is the roots of your computer tree.
Also keep in mind that a minimum power supply has to work harder to do what is required of it compared to a higher wattage power supply. That creates more heat and fan noise.

If you look at my specs you will see that I have more power supply than needed. I have to run the computer in a load test (cpu/video) stress test to work it hard enough to make the fan to come on above the lowest speed. Normal use the fan seldom comes on. The reason is because the power supply has no problem answering the system request for power.

Never cheat your computer with lack of power or cooling. They will live longer and do it quieter.
