pps files no longer open as slide show

I'm not sure when or what happened but pps files no longer open as full screen slide shows with PowerPoint 2003. When I click to open a pps file, PowerPoint opens and shows the slides in the "slide" view but that is only with PowerPoint open. I did a "detect and repair" and that didn't do anything.

I've googled this and didn't come up with a fix.

Hmm. I dont have 2003, I have 2007 and in this one, there is an option when you do a save-as to save the pps as a show so it always opens as a slideshow. Is this an option for you if you click save-as?

That's not the problem. The problem is existing pps files do not open as a slide show, when they used to.

Yes firebird. I was suggesting to try and re-save it and do a save-as to get the file type selection so you could choose (Powerpoint Show) *.pps

Can you do this an see if it fixes the problem?

I would hate to think you have to re-save all of your powerpoint files.....

Whenever there is an update to Office, things get hairy. Did you recently upgrade to 2003? if so, from what version of Office?

This is not a new or upgraded install. I've had Office 2003 installed on Vista and now Windows 7 since December.

Resaving as a Powerpoint show didn't make any difference, it still does not open as a slide show. This is on a pps file that used to open as a slide show.

Sorry Fireberd. I use 07 so I am not familiar with 2003. I was just trying to think of anything that I know of that might help. wierd that re-saving as a show didn't allow it to pop up....I googled lots of stuff and have not found anything similar to your problem. Sorry again. I hope it get resolved.

Out of curiosity, I downloaded the PP Viewer 07 and that works properly. That is not the real fix, as it worked properly with the full PP 03.

Anyone else have any suggestions to get PP 2003 working again where it will open pps files as a slide show?

I have just found one of my old pps files, loaded it to a USB stick and put in in my Win 7 machine and it plays as a screenshot. Leads me tothink that there might be a small corruption in you pps file. Have you another pps file that you could try. I would be will to upload my pps to a server for you to download and try if you wish. We might succeed here using a process of eliminytaion (I can't even spell "elimination")

I've tried several pps files that I have, that previously worked the way they should (as a slide show) with PP 2003 so it's not a pps file corruption. As I also noted using the PP Viewer 2007 works OK. It's obviously a setting (or corruption) in PP 2003 but I can't find any setting that makes a difference and detect and repair didn't help.

Using the 2007 Viewer works but it's not the answer to the problem.

But the fact that you have PP 2003 installed should not make a difference so even if you changed settings in the program it wouldn't affect this issue. The pps will run whether you have Powerpoint installed or not. All my pps files run Ok on my laptop that has no Microsoft programs installed at all let alone Powerpoint. The answer must be elsewhere. If your pps are not confidential how about loading one to a server for me to download and try? Will understand if you prefer not to.

The issue, again, is strictly an issue with PowerPoint 2003. Power Point presentation files (pps) MUST have a program associated with that file type that will display that file type, either PowerPoint, PowerPoint Viewer, Open Office equivalent program and possibly some other application. Up until recently (not sure exactly when) everything worked as it should. If I wanted to look at a pps "slide presentation" I could doubleclick on the file and it would be presented as a full screen slide show by PowerPoint 2003. Now, when I doubleclick on a pps file (that previously worked OK) PowerPoint 2003 opens and shows as "slide view". System Restore back to the earliest available Restore point did not fix the problem.

I know this thread is old but for what it's worth, I have the same problem.
However, I am running MS Office 2007.
It will not open any .pps file in slide show mode. It opens them in normal view mode.

I too have googled a lot. Everyone thinks it is how the file is saved but it seems like it is how the file is opened.
