Preparing SDD for HDD migration via cloning

Ok so the ssd has arrived and I have plugged it in to usb port via a sata adaptor. It shows up in disk management - disk 2 (see screen shot) but when I launch acronis in recovery it does not show up as a selectable destination, see other screenshot??

Please help.
I see G as removable disk2. But no partitions or anything on it!!
It says "no media"

It is definitely it as when I unplug it it disappears. I noticed that it said no media. Am I missing something.

Is the paragon migration tool free?

Acronis is fine. Just as macrium reflect. paragon should be fine as well. You can even simply clone.

But...... even win7 doesn't see the filesystem on SSD!! If win7 thinks it's a removable device and no media in it yet.... all software can't see it as well.

Do you have another working win7 pc there? I mean a desktop

hold on I have made some progress be back soon.
please explain

the usd / sata adaptor has two plugs on it and I was plugging in both as i read somewhere that sometimes the disk cannot get enough electricity from one plug. I then reverted to just the one plug and this time showed as 238GB unallocated hey presto is so I thought!!

With my new found confidence i went in Acronis and this time the ssd was listed as a destination - brilliant, you can here a but coming!!

I kicked off the restore and went to get a cup of tea as at said it would take 100 mins to complete the restore. Checked 10 mins later and there was an error message

failed to wrte to sector 0 of hard disk '2'
driect r/w operation has failed
input / output error

Cancelled that and went back to diskman and it was showing as no media again FFS.
That's the current situation.
From what I have seen it seems like that there is a problem with the adaptor, the usb connections are pretty loose.

Sorry if this is a daft question but is it possible It is possible that I have remove the hdd and replace with ssd and then then start up with windows recovery disk I made yesterday and then restore the disk image from my external drive to the SSD?

Well despite a number of attempts i been unable to get to sdd to correctly again in disk management, it is still show as no media. I am wondering whether I am going to have to return this drive to the shop and get my money back or exchange for another one. I am slowly beginning to lose the will to live.

Correct me if i am wrong, but i am not going to be able to do any install new or otherwise if the SDD continues not to be recognise correctly i.e. no media?

I haven't paid close attention to this thread, so I may have misunderstood?

Are you saying that the SSD is NOT recognized in the BIOS when it is the one and only drive connected to the laptop and that it is in the standard drive bay where the HDD was, with the HDD completely removed and disconnected?

No currently the HDD is still installed in drive bay. The ssd is connected by via a usd / sata adaptor. So would I expect to still see it in the BIOS?

I would not put a lot of faith in a drive being recognized when it is hanging off an adaptor. An adaptor is just another possible point of conflict or failure.

I certainly would NOT attempt a clean install unless the drive was in the standard internal drive bay, where the HDD was.

I am not trying (and do not want) to do a clean install. I want to clone / restore disk image to SDD.

A short while ago I ask whether I could / should swap the SSD with teh HDD and then boot from the windows recovery disk I made yesterday and then restore the disk image from my external drive to the SSD? Does that sound like a good plan?
