Printer on Network - No Driver

Thanks. I'd missed those instructions because I thought they were for a different problem. Looks like I've successfully added the printer, so I'm a step closer to printing. Only problem is, my test page just sits there in a printing queue and does nothing. Thought maybe my firewall on my desktop was blocking it, so I turned it off temporarily, but still nothing.

Here is one way to do it. Also it can be done without connecting printer through USB cable to Windows 7 machine.

1. Add Printer (click)
2. Choose local printer
3. Choose use existing port: print to file
4. If your printer is not listed, click windows update (requires internet).
5. Wait...
6. Check to see if printer is now listed.
7. Choose newly listed printer.
8. Printer will then install.

More...

1. Right click printer icon. Left click printer properties.
2. Click port tab.
3. Add new port. Local port
4. Type in address of shared printer ie \\Name or ip address of computer with attached shared printer\Shared printer name
5. Click general tab. Print test page. Run upstairs to see if your test page printed.

This worked for me after spending the best part of 2 days fiddling with zippo result and regrets about "upgrading".

I can now print from my new W7 laptop wirelessly to a HP Laserjet 1320 and Canon ip 8500. Windows found both drivers through "searching windows update" (first Step 4 of your instructions) which gave many more printer options than available from the W7 install.

Two remaining issues: are that the 1320 icon looks like a colour MFD! but the device prints as it should, like a mono laserjet. I can live with this. The second issue is that network computers (there are 3 others, 2 x XP Pro Sp3 and 1 XP Home - the latter with the attached printers) sometimes, and only sometimes, are not visible in the "network" page, but I can still print ok.

Big thanks for the valuable steer - now on to the PC visibility problem!

I can't get it to take my port name! aargh! I tried \\ComputerName\PrinterName but I keep getting "The network path was not found "

Help with Canon S900 network printer

Hi gurus -I hope you can help me. I have a home network, on which there is a WinXP PC with a Canon S900 color photo printer, working. On the same network there is a Windows 7 x64 pc. I am trying to print from the Win 7 machine to the Canon S900 printer.

Following closely the instructions earlier on this thread, (declaring a local port on the Win7 computer, \\host-name\printer-name), it proceeds ok; I then direct it to the printer driver ("inf" file), but it says that the driver is not suitable for Windows 7.

On the Canon web site, there is no 64-bit driver for the S900 printer.

What to do? Is there a "generic" Canon photo printer driver for the Canon "S series" printers?

For all people who were not able to install drivers. I've tried making it as it was explained by gadgtman but without luck.

This methode worked for me.

1) Add local printer
2) Use en Existing port FILE:
3) There you will able to choose between Update drivers & Have disk
4) For me it was enogh to Update drivers
5) Finish installation of a newly added Printer

Of course this printer is virtual but now you have your drivers installed!

1) Delete installed printer
2) Find your real printer through standard network procedure.
3) Smile because now everything works!!! (You want see message "try finding you drivers locally...")

I think this metode will save some Administrators in moving around with printer in their hands!
