Printing from Mac to Windows

I have a MacBookPro with OSX 10.6.8 and a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 to which is connected by USB a Canon MP250 printer. I have been able to network the two computers, meaning I am able to create a file on the Mac and save it on the Toshiba and vice-versa. But I am unable to print a document from the Mac on the Canon printer which is connected to the Windows laptop. I think I correctly followed instructions here and at http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/310438-howto-print-windows-shared-printer.html. The Canon printer does appear on the Mac in the list at System Prefs>Print & Fax. There, at Options & Supplies>Location, it reads smb://TLC1@(the Toshiba's IP is here)/CanonMP250Toshiba. At >Driver, I clicked on the down arrow, then "Select printer software …", then "Canon MP250 series". TLC1 is my username on the Toshiba. It is not clear what username should be in the address at Options & Supplies>Location. I have tried my MBP username and my Toshiba username and the name of the Toshiba itself, and all render the same error, which is, in TextEdit, if I click on File>Print, select that printer, it says "Printer Ready", but when I click on print, I get "Connection failed: NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED". Norton Internet Security is running on the Toshiba, but when attempting to print, I have turned off "Smart Firewall". Any help will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

Uninstall Norton completely and see if your problem disappears.

I am reluctant to uninstall Norton because I use the Toshiba laptop on the road from time to time, and I dare not do so "unprotected" (remember, that is a Windows machine, not a Mac, and so vulnerable to malicious intrusions), and to have to uninstall/re-install Norton every time the Mac has a print job will get cumbersome. Also, there is a Lenovo desktop on the same network, running Windows 7, and it is able to print on the Canon printer through the Toshiba without difficulty, which suggests to me the problem is not Norton but the Mac/Windows relationship. I'd avoid the issue by moving the printer to the Mac, but unfortunately that is not an option in the circumstances. I guess I will buy a second printer for the Mac. Thanks for your help.

Uninstall Norton to verify that is causing the problem. You can install it again when you are finished testing. Finding the problem can take time and may require software to be removed/changed/etc. Isn't that much cheaper than buying another printer?

Also, there are threads about the error message you receive. Have you searched and found this particular thread on the Apple discussion website?
