Hi all, I'm trying to transfer all my data from my old Windows XP PC to the new Windows 7 PC. What I did is I removed the main OS drive from my old XP machine and I connected the XP drive to the WIndows 7 PC as an external drive. I then copy/pasted all of the XP contents to a folder in the 2nd internal drive of my new Win7 PC. The "Documents and Settings" folder of the XP drive is about 11GB but it will transfer only 5GB to the WIn7 PC because for some folders/files it will say:"You do not have permissions to modify this folder/file". I'm using Win7 as administrator with full rights and disabled UAC. I also tried to go to properties/security settings for the folder I'm trying to move without success. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Take ownership of the XP drive to get past those permissions: Take Ownership Shortcut

From either there or the secondary HD pitstop, click Organize>Select All, then drag the collective contents of each sub-folder (Downlloads, Videos, Documents, Music, Pictures) to the corresponding Win7 User folder on the lefthand Explorer bar. Hold the left click until it expands and confirms copy location in hypertext, only then release the files.

If you plan to leave the XP files on the secondary HD, sort them into copies of the Win7 User folders you create there, then right click each to add to the related Win7 Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums.

As you have a new PC, look over also these steps to get the vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 or at least Clean Up Factory Bloatware
