Problem in upgrading to windows 7

Hello

I'm having a problem in upgrading my vista home premium operation system to windows 7 home premium but i receive an error message
it says:
The upgrade was not successful.

Your previous version of windows is being restored.

Do not restart your computer during this time.

Then nothing happen


by the way i cant make clean install for windows 7 because i need all of the files and documents in there....

Retrieve your files: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console - Windows 7 Forums.url

Boot the Win7 DVD, use Custom>Drive Tools to format the Vista partition before install.

I'd leave the Recovery Partition as you may want to run it someday to restore Vista. If not, you can wipe the entire HD first to get the cleanest possible install: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation - Windows 7 Forums.url

Then Clean Install Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums.URL

Welcome to SF. Please fill out your system specs. You weren't upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Win 7 64-bit, were you?
Can you still get Vista up? If yes, you need to backup your critical files. Then do a clean install.

The report says that my laptop is Compatible with windows 7 but there are 5 programes that are not Compatible
note: I'm Upgrading to windows 7 using external hard drive...

I suggest a clean install or get rid of those conflicts.

A clean is always best.

Zico, at some point you have to put in your system specs. We're flying blind!!!

What I suggest that you do, is back up all that is important and do a clean install. If you do an upgrade you will be back here with problems in the near future. You were given the upgrade tutorial in a prior post.

It might be easier to burn to DVD as sometimes it takes several attempts using different methods to format the USB drive to boot it to install Win7.

I find the method that always works for me is to load image file into UltraISO trial version then click Bootable tab to Write Image to USB drive, using Format button first.

You'll then need to use the one-time Boot Menu key given on first boot screen to boot the External under Hard drives, or else set the USB drive as first to boot in BIOS setup, just before target HD.

Rich and Greg, what if he images or backs up his Vista OS, reinstalls or reimages it to the external drive, then upgrades the external drive (making it the primary drive)?

As BFK and Rich have both suggested, do NOT do an upgrade. Do a clean install following the the information in the link that BFK gave you. Do not load those programs five programs that are not compatible with Windows 7. Upgrades are many times filled with problems and crashes.
