AV is worse than a virus. Believe me, I know from all the bsod and poor performance machines I've fixed on here alone.

I haven't ever ran into an issue from users complaining of malware. Or never any malware issues in the crash and debug section. Not one. Ever.

Use that to be a guide.

Malwarebytes scan every so often, jotti.org, smart downloading habits and common sense is all one needs.

Perhaps throw in the No-Script, RefBlocker and Adblock Plus Firefox plugins too.

So much better than a low-level application slowing down a pc and potentially causing bsod and many other issues.

That's mostly propaganda for high money interests. And also for uneducated users. They could possibly benefit.

First of all, BSOD are are driver/hardware problem and have all but been eliminated in W7. Second, if an AV product prevents a system from starting or running properly, it is likely due to user error.

Well, actually you are correct in some respect. The drivers for antivirus cause most bsod.

It's not user error. It's poor av software. AVG especially.

How about the advice of someone that repairs 20+ machines in this forum alone, per day?

You could also ask Chev65, ZigZag3143, Usasma - guys that do debugging along with me. They'll all tell you how antivirus causes most issues.

Coroporate environment is a completely different scenario and can not be compared. They have high value interests to protect and some of the worst users without common sense since its not their own pc. They all have an IT department that will fix the issues they don't care about when they create them.

But I am so involved in pcs and that if I did control a corporate environment, I would have so many domains blocked in the firewall it would not be funny.

I find that answer quite interesting.

The current trend in AV offerings is to give households free antivirus protection. Why? One of the biggest threats to corporate networks around the world is the unprotected household PC. AVG, avast, Microsoft, and others offer a free antivirus/antispyware solution to home users as they have come to realize that too few home users keep their PC's clean and up to date, do not use what we seem to agree on only which is safe browsing habits, or many simply did not want to or could not pay for it.

The current trend goes beyond just offering these tools to home users free of charge, with ISP's now getting in the game. With the huge advances in internet speeds and server processing abilities today, ISP's are soon to require that household PC's are in fact secure and will monitor such in the cloud.

I for one am quite glad to help all understand the threats posed by downloading files from just anywhere, especially from torrent/file sharing/P2P sites, and hope all will read up on this, and do so now.
