:)Hi,

I'm new here, and have come to ask about a problem of placing a clock-face on my desktop.

I had it there for years and then suddenly, without warning, it didn't show when I turned on my computer. This was about 5 days ago and I have been trying daily to get it back again.

I have seen all the gadgets and have clicked on the clock and it is supposed to just appear on my desktop, but it doesn't do this. I am puzzled, and annoyed now.

So then, any advice about this will be used in the process of peace in our house! I have gone on a bit about it, I must admit!

Hi, Welcome to Sevenforums.

You can try to download from MS site again and try to place again. The old gadget file might have been corrupted. Meanwhile, run antivirus and check for Malwares. Run Malware byte to scan the PC.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

Check out that link that kado897 posted above but I'm going to guess your computer just recently updated and most likely give you IE 11 and most likely changed your DPI settings, look at this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/443-dpi-display-size-settings-change.html and see if it is set above 100% if so that is the problem you will need to lower it to 100% or use one of the clock gadget that I repaired in that thread that kado897 posted above.

I've taken your advice and have changed the DPI settings from 125 to 100. It made clocks appear all over my desktop! That was because they were all the previous attempts Mr B and I had tried! It took ages to delete them, individually. Now though, the smaller clock does not have a seconds hand, which I used to find very useful on the old design.

Also the calendar gadget I have there is smaller. The calendar had remained while the clock had disappeared, you see, and now I have them both together again! Aww! :)

Another change that has come about with changing the DPI settings is the smaller size of the inbox and the smaller text, so if that can be changed to be larger and easier to read then let me know.

All grateful, all round. :)

:) I am pleased to tell you that all is well again! Genius! Thank you very much! And I was well clever to even find this website! So cheers all round

The problem is fixed. I have the clock back, and I found out how to restore the second hand too! Also, I have the larger size text in my inbox, which was how it was before, and it lasted for years.

I do not know why these problems came about in the first place. Mr B always told me never to load IE11 yet somehow it installed itself and that must be what caused the problems.

Thank you to the posters who came on here for me. I will be back if needs be. I must now click the Problem Solved box.

Hi again. I have to mark this problem as unsolved because MS have taken gadgets off their system and have warned that they can cause vulnerability to attack.

I followed the advice on here to get my clock-face back onto my desktop and I managed to do it, thanks, but now I do not even have the calendar on there. I just turned on and the clock and calendar are gone.

I saw the message from MS when I clicked through from my Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a gadget. Only the "Uninstall a gadget" link worked and when it opened it showed this:
Gadgets have been discontinued - Microsoft Windows
I hope that link works for you to see what it says.

So then, that's it. Problem deleted, not solved. Clock and calendar are not allowed on my desktop. Unless you know differently, that is!
;)

The real vulnerability are the gadgets other people make from an unknown source, if it's a gadget from Microsoft (the ones that come installed already) you will not have any problems with them as far as security risks.

I don't see the area in Programs where it says uninstall a gadget?
Are you talking about Windows features?

Sorry you can't find that page via the method I did, but just to keep a record this is what I did.

I clicked on Start on desktop and there is a list of items including Control Panel. I clicked that and got a panel headed "Adjust your computer's settings" with eight items in two columns, having four items in each column.

Item four in the first column is "Programs" with "Uninstall a program" in small blue coloured type underneath. I clicked the "Programs" link; not the "Uninstall" as both were usable but did different things.

I then got a panel with four items, and the third item is "Desktop Gadgets". Under that there are four links: "Add gadgets to the desktop" / "Get more gadgets online" / "Uninstall a gadget" / "Restore desktop gadgets installed with Windows". I tried to copy these panels to paste here but it would not do that.

I clicked "Get more gadgets online" and that's when I saw the page from Microsoft, headed "Gadgets have been discontinued". They go on to say why, being due to a security risk.

I did not dare to click on the "Uninstall a gadget" or the "Restore desktop gadgets installed with Windows". If you think I should click the "Restore" one then I will feel better about doing so, and will give it a try.

The heading "Desktop Gadgets" and the item under it "Add gadgets to the desktop" have a hand curser when hovered but they do not link anywhere. I have to go without my clock and calendar, it seems.

Sorry for going on so much, but there is no other way to show what I found and to explain it better.

The clock and the calendar have both re-appeared. I just turned my computer on and there they are. No idea why they went before, and no idea why they suddenly came back. Problem marked as solved again. Thanks for your help.

The real vulnerability are the gadgets other people make from an unknown source, if it's a gadget from Microsoft (the ones that come installed already) you will not have any problems with them as far as security risks.
Microsoft started spreading that story, after people complained that the W8 Previews didn't have gadgets.

From my point of view that leaves two explanations:

  • MS knew they were hazard long before W8, but they didn't tell anyone and no one else found out (unlikely)
  • MS were trying to scare users into using Metro apps (highly likely)
As Bongo said, 3rd party gadgets may actually do what MS has claimed (but the same is true of any 3rd party software).

Logically the Metro apps are far more dangerous (depending on the app) as they are designed to:

  1. Interact with the system
  2. Share data with each other
  3. Transmit that shared data to the Internet
