I've been trying to update win7 to Sp1. I tried through the windows update and at first it was failing to download so I ran the update verification tool and after that windows update was able to download but when installing it fails at the outset of installation with a message saying that it cant continue due to missing system files.

I next ran a chkdsk: /f /r ( took a long time )

computer rebooted and windows update was showing that i needed to reinstall all previous updates. I did that and tried the update again with the same message and results.

I then ran a svc/scannow and the scan returned a message saying that windows detected corrupt system files but was unable to fix them and that the log of the file is stored in CBS/CBS.logs.txt

For some reason I cant get privledges to open the file to see what the corrupt files are.

Any help would be great. I dont know what else to try to get this updated short of doing a repair install, which I've never done and a little hesitant of doing since I dont really want to lose andy data, programs.

Apart from this updating failing, my system hasn't had a single instability problem. Everything runs as it should..no unexpected crashes, etc...

Again, thanks for any assistance.

Okay.. so I ran another scan and got the same message. I then did:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Copied the data and pasted it into a .txt file. I"ve attached it.

can anybody make heads or tails of this. It looks like a lot wasn't repaired and a lot of it looks to be ati associated files.

Is there any wayt to force repair of thos un repairable files? thanks

Since a lot of those files are ati files, i remember reading that driver sweeper inadvertantly removes system files so I saw that other people have had similar probs installing sp1 related to missing ati system files. I went to my earliest backup in driver sweeper (latest version) and restored all those files.

When I attempted windows update again. Sp1 was able to instal and i got the restart prompt.

Now after restart, i get a new message saying that windows was unable to configure sp1 and is reverting the changes. So im getting it to instal but now windows is failing at that final configuration step. ...
