I have downloaded a text file from my PC, using Vista Premium, onto my netbook which is 7 Starter. The original file is in Works format which I do not have on 7. I converted the file to Abiword. All okay, except it takes about 2 minutes to open on the netbook. This is an Acer Aspire D255E. 250 GB HDD, I GB DDR3 Memory on a Intel Atom N455-1.66GHz, 512KB cache. I'm guessing the slow uptake is simply the lack of memory or the puny CPU. I've tried saving to the taskbar, but it is always gone when I re-boot. Am I right, if not anyone any ideas how I can get this thing to move quicker.
The file is 5.8 MB in size.

A text file has no format. Files from various software use various formats. If you just need to see the text, then save it as a text file. You can then open this with any text editor, and many will be a lot faster than various word processors.

If you want the formatting, then you have to use a system that can handle it.

Libre Office can handle "Works" formats;

LibreOffice Productivity Suite Download » LibreOffice

I don't know how that will compare to Abiword for speed on a comparatively "weak" netbook.

If you actually save the file to your netbook, then it should not disappear.

Mike,

Thanks for the fast response. I have to have the file in either Works or Abiword for editing purposes. I'll look at the Libre Office you have suggested, but I'm guessing the slow uptake is something to do with the lack of resources on my netbook.

Thanks again,

Thom L

My pleasure.

I also think that the rather weak resources are the main problem.
