Video files work perfectly when reproduced either online or from an external hard drive, but not when reproduced from the computer's drive itself. I'm using Intel(R) HD Graphics and AMD Radeon HD 6300M, and my hd is ATA Toshiba mk6465gs scsi

Thanks a lot.

The error is the file doesn't play smoothly and the hdd light stays on. I also have problems to use other applications while this is happening. I've actually tried to play the same files from an external hd and from the internet and they only fail when I play them from the laptop's drive.

Ok, this makes me think there are issues with the internal drive. Two things:

Did you install latest chipset and storage drivers? If you post the full model name of your laptop (it's a code-like name in a sticker under the laptop, NOT the sticker with Windows activation code) I can help find them.

Can you run a full disk check? This tutorial, do step 8 (check both boxes). It will reboot and display text saying what it is doing. Will take a few hours and during that time the laptop will be unavailable for anything else. Then when it has finished, this tutorial to get the results and post them here (the OPTION TWO is the fastest method).

I would:
Defrag the hard drive. Betting the BIG files aren't contiguous (scattered data) and this is the standard symptom, and not being helped by a likely slower 5400RPM hard drive used in most laptops, because they generate less heat.

Would work fine on the other components because they aren't fragmented as much, if at all.

If trying to use other apps while playing video, yeah those will struggle too, all pulling from the same drive.

Faladu, only 8% of the disk is fragmented and I really have very few big files right now since I recently formatted the drive in an attempt to solve this issue. Bobafetthotmail, I just found out my event viewer is not working either. I tried to get it to work, but it tells me: "error 4201: a data provider does not recognise the instance name as valid." (I'm translating without knowing what it means so don't expect accuracy) As regards the model number, I think it's dv7-4283cl.
Thanks.

As for your laptop's model, HP says that the laptops of that model made between December 2010 and February 2011 could have a crappy chipset that would degrade the performance of SATA devices over time (internal hard drives and DVD drives, which could be your case). Read here to know if your laptop is one of them, and if it's one of them you need to call HP to report the problem.

As for that error, something is amiss in system files, follow this tutorial to try to fix it automatically. If it does not work, try this. (renaming the C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup folder into something else)

Other than that, this is the page about your laptop, you can run the automatic scan to see if you have all the drivers, or say your OS below and download and install the latest drivers under "chipset" and "storage" categories.

I dug up this as possible solution: [edited it, they used past tense and forgot hopefully, muhahaha!]

Try following steps to resolve this issue:

1. Use msconfig to switch to safe mode boot
2. Boot to safe mode
3. run cmd.exe as an administrator
4. type "cd C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI"
5. type "rename RtBackup RtBackup2"
6. Use msconfig to switch to normal boot mode
7. Reboot and find event viewer working
, hopefully.

Was listed as solution for that error 4201.

Fortunately, my laptop hasn't got the faulty chipset. Changing the name of the RtBackup folder worked and this is the result of the scan. It's in Spanish but I assume the technical issues are the same. If not, tell me and I will try to translate them.

First things first: Did the check disk fix the playing issue? Did you install the drivers I said?

Now we go examining the logs. As you guessed, language isn't a major problem (as long as it is not an asian language anyway).

16 KB en sectores defectuosos.
This. Defective sectors. This is permanent hardware damage. Some of the memory cells on the surface of the drive are damaged.

While 16 KB (kilobytes) isn't a significant amount for now, this is a bad sign, as it's likely that the more time goes on the more defective sectors will pop up until eventually the drive dies. The disk check found and blacklisted them (so they are not going to be used again), so the drive should work fine for the moment.

I recommend to start looking for a new hard drive, although if you like to gamble you can keep it as it is and hope that no more defective sectors will pop up (they usually do).
Moving the stuff from the current drive to a new one is relatively quick and painless, if you don't know ask about it and someone will provide directions.

Check disk didn't solve it and neither did new drivers. Some of the drivers told me I had a newer version in my computer, is that possible or this newer version is not the right one? As for changing the drive, I'll keep it in mind, but I'd like to know that'll solve the issue, I don't want to have to change something else 10 minutes later (budget thing).
