No worries though as my copy was legal and it was a retail product key so after all that I'm OK, although I've called Noel a few names for worrying me.

.........EVERY PC from major manufacturers come with two Keys - the OEM_SLP Key with which it is originally installed, and which self-activates using the SLIC table and internal certificates; and the COA_SLP Key which requires Internet or Telephone activation........ Telephone activation via an operator WILL be required - and explanations given and accepted. Answering the operator with incorrect or evasive responses will result in the activation being refused, and possibly the Key being blocked.

In general, the first time a COA_SLP Key is activated, it must be by telephone (to ensure that it is activated on the correct machine) - after that, activation by internet would be sufficient.......

I may be misreading, but I don't agree with one of your points on the COA SLP. I use that key anytime I do a clean install on any OEM system, and have never once had to phone in the activation. - DeaconFrost in his post #24 in this thread two weeks ago.

Are you referring to the Product Key on COA sticker, Deacon? I also rarely have had to activate it by phone and then it is only a robocall to trade the series of numbers which update the Hardware signature in MS Servers. - gregrocker in his post # 25 in the same thread

Yes, the one on the COA sticker. I've never had an issue activating those keys online.- DeaconFrost in his post #26 in the same thread reconfirming it.

I used a Dell OEM key from the COA sticker today to Reinstall Windows 7 which had previously been Factory SLP activated and it required no phone activation.- gregrocker in his post #25 in this thread 3 weeks ago.


I have also read another report in this very forum wherein the user had indicated that the COA-SLP activation went through online without the need for any activation by phone.

If these are true - I have no reason to disbelieve these veterans - , I also have no reason to disbelieve what windude99 has stated, that he picked up the COA key on the sticker of an OEM machine, and used it to activate Windows 7 on another machine and he was able to activate online without any problem.

So much on what we really know about COA-SLP activation.

There is a big difference between an OEM_SLP Key (from the likes of Dell) and an OEM_NSLP (System Builder) Key.

The System Builder Key should activate over the internet from the get-go.

Many people don't have a clue which Key is in use on their machine until they come to a reformat/reainstall. or the OEM_SLP self-activation breaks down. Once the COA_SLPKey has been activated once on that machine, it will quite happily re-activate again over the internet, even if the machine has been reinstalled with the proper OEM_SLP and Recovery disks in the meantime.

I'm quite prepared to believe that these things can happen - but since my MS source tells me the normal procedure is for telephone activation, that is the expected route, as far as I'm concerned.

We've been down this discussion before - and there is no point in continuing it wither way. At the end of the day, what matters is that one way or another an OP's computer gets activated with a genuine key and valid license.
