programs don't respond

running windows 7 pro 64bit, when leaving computer on all day and returning from work none of the short cuts on start bar will open and can't select restart from start menu, have to use keyboard to shut down computer. haven't looked at minidump or event viewer yet.

Try a memory diagnostic in search, and test over night. Just type those words in search.

when running memory diagnostics on 2nd pass screen turns black, have left it that way for hours and nothing.

Wow, I made that other post many months ago. Forgot all about it.
Seems that the problem is deeper than I thought.
Try to run a full anti virus scan
Download and scan with malwarebytes.
If negative run a mem test using the link below.

have ran malwarebytes and clean. using security essentials for anti virus.

tried usb step won't boot, tried cd step and says loading but never runs.
