How to Uninstall Programs using Command Prompt in Windows

   Information
This tutorial will show you how to uninstall programs using a command prompt in XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

   Note
This will only list programs that use Windows Installer when installed.

It is recommended to uninstall a program in Programs and Features if able instead to have a full list of installed program.

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

2. Open an elevated command prompt in XP/Vista/Windows 7 or Windows 8, and go to step 4 below.

3. Open Safe Mode with command prompt in XP/Vista/Windows 7 or Windows 8, and go to step 4 below.

4. In the command prompt, type wmic and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
Uninstall_Programs_Command_Line-1.jpg
5. Type product get name and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This will give you a list of program names installed on your computer to use in the next step. This list will not always have all of the programs listed in Programs and Features though.
Uninstall_Programs_Command_Line-2.jpg
6. Type in either command below using the exact name of the program (ex: Microsoft Silverlight) listed in step 5 above within quotes that you want to uninstall, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
(To be prompted Y/N to approve. Recommended)

product where name=”name of program” call uninstall

(To NOT be prompted Y/N to approve.)

product where name=”name of program” call uninstall /nointeractive

Uninstall_Programs_Command_Line-3.jpg
7. If prompted, type Y to confirm uninstalling the program, and press Enter. (see screenshot above)

8. When successfully uninstalled, you can close the command prompt. (see screenshot below)

That's it,
Shawn

I think there is a 5 sec delay which cannot be changed ( I read that somewhere ), however it did work without ":root\cli>" portion of the command.
Thanks again Brink

Hi, I have spent an awful lot of time figuring out why my laptop automatically restarts when I hit uninstall from the Control Panel til I saw this forum. I followed the instructions but it didn't worked and the program is still in my laptop.
Result showed "Method Execution Successful" with a ReturnValue=1603
All I want is to successfully uninstall MS Office Professional 2010 so I can use 2013.

Help please?
Thanks in advance.

Hello XtriMzZ, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What AV program do you have installed? They may have a tool available to remove it if it won't uninstall normally in Programs and Features.

Hello ohohthea, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

Please provide more details about your issue.

Is this in XP or Windows 7?

What program is this for?

Did you already try to uninstall the program normally in Programs and Features? If so, what happened? Any error messages?

Hello Connor, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

According to the Net Nanny support page below, that program requires you to enter an uninstall password to be able to uninstall it. This is to prevent kids from trying to bypass the parents.

Enter your Uninstall password – typically this is your Admin password. If your Admin password does not work for uninstalling, login to Admin Tools and under Passwords you can change the Uninstall password there.

Are you the administrator?

If you are and still don't know the password, then the only way that I know of to remove it is to reinstall Windows.

cant uninstall windows live essentials

I have for a long time tried to uninstall Windows live Essentials and everything included With it. this Method was then my only hope, but after doing this like 7 times on every Windows live mail and Windows live Essentials, it still didnt work. when I run the uninstall command, it says:

Code:
wmic:root\cli>product where name="windows live mail" call uninstall /nointeractive
Executing (\\LAPTOP-4T9JTTIN\ROOT\CIMV2:Win32_Product.IdentifyingNumber="{52C2AB71-35AC-4A9C-A171-BBDE2591585A}",Name="Windows Live Mail",Version="16.4.3528.0331")->Uninstall()
Method execution successful.
Out Parameters:
instance of __PARAMETERS
{
        ReturnValue = 1603;
};

Executing (\\LAPTOP-4T9JTTIN\ROOT\CIMV2:Win32_Product.IdentifyingNumber="{B775C26B-EAA8-4A11-ACBF-76E52DF6B805}",Name="Windows Live Mail",Version="16.4.3528.0331")->Uninstall()
Method execution successful.
Out Parameters:
instance of __PARAMETERS
{
        ReturnValue = 1603;
};

Executing (\\LAPTOP-4T9JTTIN\ROOT\CIMV2:Win32_Product.IdentifyingNumber="{BAD27F0E-5165-49A5-BE66-AF5BF73F2FEE}",Name="Windows Live Mail",Version="16.4.3528.0331")->Uninstall()
Method execution successful.
Out Parameters:
instance of __PARAMETERS
{
        ReturnValue = 1603;
};

wmic:root\cli>

so it says it was successful, but it is still in the list after i run the "Product get name" command.
any idea how to remove it completely from my system?

Hello cookedporkchop1, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

The "Method execution successful" only indicates that the command was ran successfully. However, the "ReturnValue = 1603" error code is mostly returned when any action fails meaning nothing was uninstalled.

In this case, it's most likely due to it already being uninstalled. Is "Windows Essentials" listed in Programs and Features?

I'm trying to add a runonce command to uninstall a program once the computer is restarted..
I have created this bat, but I get an error Invalid syntax error.
any idee what part is wrong?

Code:
REG ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce /v !UOO /d "cmd /c wmic product where "InstallLocation='C:\\Program Files\\OO Software\\Defrag\\'" call uninstall"

Hello apoklyps3, :)

You might see if running the command at startup using an elevated task may work better.

(Program/script)
cmd.exe

(Add arguments)
/c wmic product where name="C:\Program Files\OO Software\Defrag" call uninstall /nointeractive

You would check "Run with highest privileges" at step 8 below.

If you only want it to run once and never again, are you able to just run the command normally in an elevated command prompt instead?

If not, then I suppose you could delete the elevated task after it runs once.
