Proper exact address syntax?

If I would like to point one PC at the exact address of another PC over the internet, NOT a local area network, how would it look?

http:293.86.45.567.123:192.168.0.199 (example, don't try it, probably some creep's ip, lol!)

I have tried googling syntax, address etc. but I am just lost, and the sites are too technical for me.

I need to be able to point my remote PC at my home PC and I have a dynamic public address. As it is just needed rarely, and only across town, I don't mind manually entering the new dynamic address if need be, I just don't know how properly syntax it. Do I need the port I forwarded in the address as well.

I will be doing a VPN connection with Windows (not 3rd party) and would like a PPTP connection. Once I have my setup configged and routed properly, which I think I do, it's just a matter of entering the ip address properly.

you would use ports and port forwarding.

173.164.26.65:81
could point to 10.28.43.2

and 173.164.26.65:82
can point to 10.28.49.253

you will use your router to set up port forwarding. Be sure to enable PPTP pass through.

PPTP is ticked in my router. Doesn't say Pass-thru though. Only thing I saw with PPTP.

I don't get how to do the rest though, meaning what to enter into the VPN location/address box.

I'm still lost, sorry. I don't even know how to explain how I'm lost. I know how to direct traffic for say bittorrent to my PC with a specific port.

This seems different though

Believe it or not its almost exactly the same
I forget the exact port... I have to look it up anytime I do any configuration for my vpn... you forward that to the machine you are going to be using.

use Putty and Tunnelling -- IMO that's the easiest way of connecting to a Home Computer from a remote location and it often gets round Blocked Ports if you are trying to RDP for example to a Home computer from an Office where most of the ports other than 80 (or 8080) are blocked.


Here's an easy example of connecting to a remote MySQL server for example

I am trying to have a VPN connection between my PC/network and a coworker/friend's PC.

So he can browse my network when he feels like it, or I can access my data when I am at his house.

My problem is how to enter the "Internet Address" properly so that his PC can find my network.

Do I just need to enter my public ip......my public ip + LAN address+port..


And how would I write it. I don't have a domain name or website name. I tried setting up stuff like that, way beyond me.

You should just need the public Ip no port for that unless you have it set to something besides default.

As you have access to both ends of the link you could do this by the use of something such as Logmein or my personal choice Teamviewer.

As you want access to your system whilst you are not there you may want to set-up the unattended option or you could just run the software on your system when you want to. Teamviewer fully supports VPN and does all the setup for you, It's free for personal use

I am not that tekk saavy at all. I have no idea about what ssh is, it took me forever to get this far.

I managed a direct connect on PS3 Media Server from PC to PS3, with ICS thru my WiFi, managed to add exceptions thru the firewall, had full function on everything, after some tweaking, then I tore it all down after I read that it might have been what was causing errors when I was trying to connect this VPN.

Now, I have countless hours on this and I am completely stumped, and frustrated.
I'm gonna give up. I have spent two days on this and I have had it. Didn't think a VPN was this hard. Thanks though.

I would ideally like to do this just with Windows. Kinda throws Virtual PRIVATE Network out the window when using a 3rd party route with something like TeamViewer

I want to straight shot from his PC to my network.

I have no idea what ssh is or the other like ipSec etc. or SQL

I just saw short vids on YouTube on how to do VPN, looked simple. Nothing but problems.

Yes sir, to the point of exhaustion. As well as the Initiate Outgoing VPN tutorial.

I'll get back to you on this if I figure it out. I'm hating that I even tried this, right about now.

I will have to say, On my first attempt to set up a vpn I went crazy... It took me numerous hours and the hardest thing was not the part on the operating systems it was the configuration of the router's firewall. It has to be perfect. I just changed firewalls and forgot to swap over my config and now I have about another 3 hours of annoying and trying pain and chain smoking....

It creates a virtual network between as many PCs as you wish. Just download and install it on both machines, create a network and join both computers to it. Then you'll be able to connect shares, etc. between the two machines regardless of the routers, ports, etc. between them.

This is where I have gotten to so far, and it looks promising.

When I left my house tonight, to go to my buddy's place, my Network and Sharing Center had me connected to one Network: NORAD C.C. with both wired and WiFi adapter.

I tried to access the VPN I set up at my house, and I came up with failure yet again......

But, when I got home I saw this in Network and Sharing Center......


Now, to me, I am assuming:sarc: that this means my query made it past my router and to the host PC.:shock: Could this be.

And if so, it seems like it is just a matter of Windows firewall, which I reset to defaults recently.

Is my logic sound, that I managed to at least navigate thru my router. I hope so because I think I can do the firewall, I would just need a little advice.

Can anyone tell me if my logic is sound, and/or help me to proceed?

Could this be why I can't connect?

I have GRE 47 protocol inbound exception now in firewall, which I just discovered....wasn't. Still can't connect.

Any other advice.
