Pure Stupidity or Genius?

Defragging is to arrange physical data clusters syncroniously...

Since SSD's have no physical sectors it doesn't matter if data gets shot all over the storage cells...

i think that may have been the older Gen SSDS.
Current Gen SSDs, Defragging actually helps. but not often.


PerfectDisk, recommends Consolodate only, & works well for SSD.
But not daily or weekly .. But every 2 weeks to once a month, followed by a free space cleaner keeps them running better and at full speed.
Its actually the recommended method for OCZ SSDs, but i would guess other manufacturers have a similar tools for maintenance, to clean up free space, Bi-weekly or monthly.


Diskeeper has a special defrag for for SSDs as well, called HYPERFAST, but I do not know how well this works or how it is different from PD10s consolodate.
Couldn't say, never used it.

Windows built in defrag is NOT recommended for SSD however.

Perhaps there are 'conditioning' programs. As long as people are prepared to buy them then I guess they'll exist for sale, but SSD performance does not degrade with system fragmentation as happens a physical hard drive.

It takes the drive controller no longer to fetch data from one location, or multiple locations simultaneously, it can fill the buffers much much faster than was possible with a physical hard disk...

Personally I don't even reckon Windows native defrag is good for platter drives...

HAHA I agree, and have never used Windows built in one.

As far as the SSD defrag recommendations, I think its fair to mention my own personal observations for those who are interested.

For me, i have tried the PD consolodate method and free space cleaner.

It does work, and a benchmark does show as much ....
However, i would add that in real world use, the SSD is so fast that even a 20% drop in performance is not even noticeable nor does it seem to effect anything.
You'll really only see it in a benchmark

IMHO, i agree it doesn't seem needed in the end.

What i mean is, after a week of normal use you may drop in write performance a bit, which seems to effect read a bit.
i think this occurs because the SSD has written to all the "free" spaces,(my guess due to its wear balancing) and now must erase before writing.
Which is really, from my understanding all a FS cleaner does, writes 1s to empty blocks so no erases cycle happens speeding things up a bit)

However, given time , performance seems to increase again & balance out on its own if you just leave it alone.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the inner workings, this seems to be the case from my own observation.

So is defragging a good idea? I honestly can't say.
All i know is in terms of real world use, I cant tell when its supposedly needed to do these steps, or not. Even after a month of reg. use.
And can only see the results of doing so in a benchmark.

The PD defrag, and FS cleaner is supposed to help not only perf. but the lifespan of the SSD though.
