Puzzling Permissions Quandary

My son just recently sent away for (how sad that you just can't go to a store and buy) a Windows 7 desktop from HP. His old XP was becoming more trouble than it was worth.

So I went over to his place, took the HD out of the XP PC and put it in an empty bay on the 7, and showed him how he now had all his old stuff on an 'F' drive.

I apparently didn't go far enough, because he called me today and said that, although all of the files are on the F drive, there's a number of folders that have little locks on them. He can bring up a list of the file contents, but when he clicks on say, a picture to view it, he gets a message that

'Windows photo viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location'

I told him I could fix that in a snap.

I couldn't. I right clicked the folders with the locks, hitting tabs for file sharing and security, right clicked the F drive, and always came away with nothing.

Unfortunately, I'm not at the site with the W7 PC, but if anybody could provide some simple step-by-step list of things to do, or diagnostics to run, I'd appreciate it. He runs a smal business and most of his blank invoices are on that F: drive, and he desperately needs access to them.
