Question about hard drives

Hey everyone,

I have a clickfree 500GB external hard drive (runs on USB 2.0 and a AC adaptor). I was wondering about installing it in my computer. In other words, if i ever want to use it, i dont have to keep pluggin the usb 2.0 in and use and plug it out and stuff. I was wondering if i could get inside the external hard drive and get the actual hard drive and install it in ethier my laptop or desktop so it becomes a Internal hard drive.
So first of all, i was wondering if this is possible. Could i do this?
2nd. Would i be able to install it in my Laptop or Desktop computer?
3rd. If i do manage to install it, would it damage the files that are already on it?
4th. Are all these Ideas just a dream? or Could i make them into reality ?

Likely the drive inside is a std. 3.5 or 2.5 drive. If the case is sealed with heat and not screwed it will take a bunch of effort. Before trying this please back all data up to other drive and verify. To my way of thinking as cheap as one can purchase a quality 1/2 tb internal drive just do that and keep this drive as an external. If you just want to open it up because your curious and it's got screws that assemble it, back up and go for it. Go slow and it should all be unplug able and install able. Worst case you say to heck with this and reassemble back!

thanks for the help but i dont understand your short form words (like std. 3.5 and 2.5) if you don't mind, please expalin to me what that means and what the differences are. And yes it doesnt not use screws to hold it.

Two standardized internal drive sizes, 3.5" drives and 2.5" drives normally found in portable devices. The key here is likely this drive is a low 5,400 rpm speed and may have little cache memory. If this is the case your much better served to order and cheap high RPM high cache memory drive and install that.

I've seen people convert internal drives to external, but not the other way around.

Most of seagate's external hard drives are 2.5" (laptop) hard drives (Seagate owns Maxtor). If I am not mistaken, the Maxtor one touch is an automatic backup hard drive. The others who told you that it is probably a very slow drive are correct. If all my assumptions are correct, a good backup external hd is more valuable to you than another internal one. Laptop internal hd's are very cheap right now and you will know exactly what you are getting. If you need another internal HD for your laptop, just buy you a 7200 RMP one and keep your backup.

I agree it will be a 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD. Better, and much easier to purchase a good 7200rpm internal storage drive. A Guy
