Question about system images

That's what I was hoping but doesn't seem to be the case , I will try it again. After I download it , it would not show anywhere on my computer , just keeps telling me it's a 32 bit and I have 64.

Maybe I am wrong and it does not install. Usually 32bit programs work well on 64bit systems but I never tried a 32bit Macrium.

I will try it again, what I meant was during the download when it appeared finished it kept telling me it's a 32 bit program and I had a 64bit machine.

You should probably follow this tutorial by WHS:

Thanks , I managed to continue but I can't seem to find a drive that I can put the backup in because the message keeps saying it's already included.

Sounds to me like you are trying to save the image on a drive that is part of the image.

No can do. Verboten. Not possible.



If you have a C drive and want to make an image of the C drive, you MUST store that file on some other partition.

It's up to you to come up with the location.

If you have no such location, you may as well uninstall Macrium.

Do you have an external USB drive you can attach to the PC?
If you do, plug it in, and you should be able to use it as the backup destination.

If you don't have an external USB drive, do you have a DVD burner ?
If you have a DVD burner, you should be able to use that as the backup destination.

I don't normally recommend backing up to DVD discs, but I would use it rather than have no backup at all.
If you do use DVDs, it may take many discs depending on how much data needs to be backed up.

Tell me about it , it took 7 disks for one backup , not doing that anymore.

You don't want to make the backup on the same disk - what if that disk breals. You want to put your backup images on an external disk.

This thread had me curious so i played around with downloading/installing Macrium.
To me it seems you may get some specific version such a 32Bit/64Bit depending on where you get the installer from.

i.e. FileHippo downloads the 32 Bit installer only ...

I found Major Geeks has the "Universal Installer", the download filename is reflectdl.exe

I downloaded the MG installer on a 64 Bit OS and then installed Macrium on a 32 Bit OS - no problems.

Yeah right - a PC without at least one or two external disks is only half a PC. I have more than a dozen, LOL. Get a USB3 model if you have a USB3 port. Example

I agree, the more devices a person has for backup redundancy the better ...
Having said that, in my experience HD failure is not the primary reason I need to restore ...

99.99 % of the time I RESTORE is to undo some change I made ...
Usually some program I installed, caused issues, I didn't like it, whatever.
Maybe some "configuration change" I read about and tried, and it "was a bad idea" for me ...
Maybe Patch Tuesday updates broke my system.

In my years with PCs I've had 1 HD failure.
I can't count the number of times I recovered from my playing around ...

Restoring from a partition on the Same HD as the OS works for me 99.99%
It is just another backup location ...
I recommend having ANY (including the same HD) backup, rather than NO backup available at all.

I would not argue with that. However, if you image to the same disk, it will be awfully slow because of the arm contention - unless it is a SSD.

I did have a few disks die on me, even one SSD. So these things do happen. And that's when you need your images the most. And as you said, in backups you want to have redundancy.
