Question about upgrading to 64 bit

I have been scouring the internet this morning trying to find out if my machine is capable of running 64 bit Windows 7. I am currently running 32 bit XP Pro.

Here are my computer's stats:
Intel Dual Core E2180 @ 2.0GHz
3 GB of Ram
Video Card - AMD Radeon HD 6670

According to the Intel site regarding this processor, it says "64-bit computing on Intel® architecture requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel® 64 architecture. Processors will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel 64 architecture-enabled BIOS. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software configurations. Consult with your system vendor for more information."

Important text in bold. I wasn't really sure what this meant? And if it matters my goal is to upgrade so that I can utilize more memory. Thanks in advance!

The processor is what determines the ability to run a 64-bit OS, and in your case, it does support the feature.

If you plan to upgrade your RAM then I'd consider 64bit Clean Install Windows 7.

With 3gb RAM I'd stick with 32 bit.

Thanks for the quick responses! One other question: I am trying to decide what version to purchase. It appears that I can't do an "Upgrade" from XP. Is there a version I can buy that will allow me to install more than once? I ask this because I typically upgrade my PC every 4 years or so and don't want to have to purchase a new copy when I do.

Any Win7 version can be reinstalled as often as you want as long as it's only on one machine at a time. You qualify for Upgrade version which has a considerable price break.

Most consumers only need Home Premium which is offered online at Buy.com, Newegg and Amazon in a Family 3 pack of licenses for only slightly more than the price of one copy.
