I have always wondered about this and finally getting to ask. In the attached pic you can see that one of my systems has an Nvidia video card; that also installs audio drivers.

But I always wondered about the one called "High Definition Audio Device". When I look in to that one it is driven by a Microsoft driver. The motherboard manual states that it has a Realtek ALC892 audio so I was wondering (and this is just wondering) if that one item should have the Realtek driver instead of the Microsoft one.

Now this is just information only, I have no problems or issues going on and I use the HDMI output from the video card, but I just always wondered when I come across this (even on other peoples computers and laptops) if that should have the driver of the manufacturer and not the Microsoft one.

Just wondering, thanks

To answer your question, yes that is the default Microsoft audio driver. It is rather basic, and in general provides just enough functionality to be able to get sound (and quite often the mic doesn't work). And yes if you want to sound card full functional you need to install the proper driver for it. Usually you would get it from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.

In your case you can either install it or not, seeing as you are using the audio from your video card.
