Questions regarding Serial Key, and 64bit Install

Hello, sorry in advance if my thread title isn't appropriate.

Now, my questions revolve around a sort of odd scenario. I took my computer in for some repairs and requested that I get Windows 7 installed on it since they wiped the hard drive for me to begin with. So they did that and never bothered to ask if I wanted 32bit, or 64bit.

My motherboard and so on are 64bit compatible, and the sole reason why I want this is because many of my video-games claim that I don't have enough memory with the 3.25gb of RAM usage to use certain video settings. In reality I have 16gb of RAM ready to be used, unfortunately the 32bit Windows 7 can't use it. Kind of lame that in 2012 all versions can't simply do it, but I'm sure more technological reasons negate it.

Now my questions are that my current 32bit Windows 7 serial key can be used with a different install CD that is 64bit? My sister has Windows 7 64bit CD and I'm wondering is that even legal to do to begin with, as well as possible? Oh and I'm aware they must be the same version such as Home Premium, which they are.

Yes you can use the same key on 32 bit and 64 bit, as long as it's the same version you will be OK

Your techie should be shot for incompetence :)
A 32-bit operating system can NEVER address more than 4GB of RAM without going through all sorts of jiggery-pokery to do so. The tech should have realised that with the amount of RAM you have installed (and with the existing installation presumably having been 64-bit), a 64-bit install was essential.

You can use the same Key for either 32-bit or 64-bit installations. You may find it preferable to download the lastest Retail ISO and burn a disk, rather than use your sister's disk, if it's the older RTM release version.

Look here for links to the legitimate downloads.

Noel is right - those techs were idiots. I would go back to them and insist that they install a 64bit version. It is not guarenteed that your 32bit key will work with a 64bit .iso because you do not know what they used for the installation.

You'll be OK if they used a retail version but if they used some screwy OEM version, it may not work.

Yeah, those techs were the most unorganized workers I've seen in the tech field.

My sister's Windows 7 disc came with her CyberPower PC all it says is "For Distribution Only with a New CyberPower PC" as well as "The software included on this Recovery media was-pre-installed on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your CyberPower computer system"

They gave me the install disc for the one they used it says on there OEM System Builder Pack.

That's the proper disk, at least - hopefully they gave you the COA sticker to go with it (which should have been attached to the PC)?

Let's just check before you do anyything irreversible.
please run an MGADiag report, and post the results - it will tell us whether you've been conned in any (other) way.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Good - at least they appear to have given you a genuine installation and Key

Download the x64 Home Premium SP1 refresh ISO file from my earlier link, burn the disk from it, and then first check that the disk boots the machine properly.
You can then do a clean install from that disk with the Key from your COA sticker.- it WILL wipe the current installation clean, so back up all data to external media first!

You will almost certainly need to use telephone activation once installed.

Basically, yes - assuming you've burned it properly, it should boot the machine, and you'll be straight into the installer.
Input your Key on request.

Don't forget to back up your data to external media before starting!

There is no point in wasting an expensive BluRay disk for 4GB when it can hold 25GB min.
A DVD is much more reliable anyhow.

Lol I'm back for a few more questions, I know, I know... I just want to make sure I don't screw up something.

Now the burn disc worked like a charm and I'm at the Install Windows screen and I see two partition's, one of system, and the other is primary. I'm assuming I must delete the primary partition 2 that has the 931.4gb on it? Just to refresh everyone's memory I have an OEM OS of Windows 7 and I want to turn it to 64bit from 32bit so I'm doing a clean install.

To make sure I'm reading this right just use the drive options and click delete on both partitions and install on the unallocated one that pops up?

Yep - the system will automatically create a new System Reserved partition of around 100MB, and the main (C: drive) partition, whihc will be the rest of the disk
If you want to prevent the creation of the (invisible to Windows) System Reserved partition, you will need to create partitions to fill the disk before continuing the install.
This forces Windows to put the boot data into the normal Windows partition.

Okay the install got to like 21% and gave me a corrupt file error and an error code saying error code 0x80070570. Is it likely that my disc is corrupt that I just burned?

Hi Aaron,

Perhaps the disc was an issue - try another one, but this time burn it at 4x speed, no faster than that. If you still get those problems, try this technique using a USB thumb drive instead:

Use this tool to make a bootable USB (must be 4GB in size) using the ISO you downloaded:

Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3 | USB Pen Drive Linux

Ensure that the PC can boot from a USB drive by checking that in the BIOS settings. Insert the USB, turn on the computer, and it will boot from the USB drive. Now install Windows 7 as normal.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,
Golden
